Jasper had not planned on going home tonight. Just like she did not plan on going to that party on Saturday night. Or getting drunk and causing a scene in the middle of Brandon Mannings’ living room. But that was the thing with her, she supposed. She didn’t think before she acted. And that might have been her biggest flaw.
The lights of the passing street lamps shuttered across the floor of the bus and Jasper found herself looking at Juno, curled up and leaning her head against the window. She didn’t ask her to come with her. She didn’t ask to drop everything and leave in order to save Jasper’s pride. But she did. And here they were, the dark highway all but empty. Ghosts in the night returning to their past.
Juno stirred, shifting away as she straightened. “’Ow long until we’re there?”
Jasper shrugged and waited for her phone to illuminate the time. “Dunno. Another two hours?”
“Ugh.” She stretched her arms over the back of their seat with as much dramatics as one would expect of an acting student. “That’s what you get for living out in the boonies.”
“Didn’t have to come with me, y’know. Can face Leon and Ansel on my own.”
She stared pointedly, a bitter smile beginning to stretch across her lips. “’S fine.”
Jasper didn’t believe it for a second. Their entire childhood all the way to high school had been spent watching Juno make all the sacrifices for Jasper’s mistakes. She may pretend but Jasper knew. When she smiled, she hid the truth of who she really was.
Remember how I talked about my Spookables WIP?
