The images are 160 x 160 each, which is ideal for arranging three images in a row in Tumblr (H/T genandhisqueen). Once the images are 160 x 160 each, it is easier to click and drag the images next to each other three in a row for three rows.

Tutorial: I really need to write more tutorials soon--but my process is way too long for so simple a task. In general, here are my steps:

Have the video clip in MP4 format. If using an online clip, download the video, as almost every Internet browser has some add-on (I use Download Helper in Firefox). Save the MP4 version from YouTube or another video site (or you may convert later from FLV; I use Free FLV Converter, but an older version). If using a DVD or Blu Ray, rip video clips for PhotoShop (or screen caps for GNU Image Manipulation) in KM Player (ideal for Window) or VLC Player (ideal for Apple). (VLC Player clips usually require subsequent conversion through through HandBrake). You also can make screen caps directly from the video, whether in KM Player, VLC Player, or your operating system itself (Windows: Print Screen Key; Apple: Apple/Command + Shift + 3 for full screen, or Apple/Command + Shift + 4 for selection); if you do so, skip to Step #3. 

If using GNU Image Manipulation, you must make screen caps from the video (MP4, DVD, or Blu Ray). Upon making those screen caps, open them in GNU Image Manipulation to change as suits your desires. If using PhotoShop, you can open the MP4 clip directly ("Import Video Source") to create screen caps as individual layers in one PhotoShop file.

After you isolate your screen caps, in PhotoShop or GNU Image, use the selection tool. Hold the Shift key to get a perfect square: start at the corner where you want the icon to begin, and drag until you cover all of the character's head. 

Crop the image.

Re-size the image to 160 x 160 (which are dimensions that best suit a row of three images in Tumblr, and which is a decent size for avatars and other icons). 

This work takes me a long time, so I appreciate any advice to expedite the process.

I just got a Macbook to replace my Windows Vista PC.  Unfortunately, I see that there is no Apple version of KM Player, which when coupled with GNU Image Manipulation I depend on for creating GIFs.  Unfortunately, Apple does not support KM Player, and I do not want to spend the money to get Adobe PhotoShop.

Which free Apple-compatible alternatives are there to KM Player that would allow me to rip screen caps from videos?
