Sometimes the Wolf, Whumptober Day 24

hello all! another day, another Whumptober prompt fill! the prompt i used for this one was "I thought they were with you!"

Melshi stands before him sagging and spent— both from the harrowing escape and the guilt that no doubt is eating at him. And from the knowledge that there is no talking Cassian out of this foolhardy mission.

“I know what I’m doing. You’re in charge, now, Melsh. See to it,” Cassian tells him, voice warmer and softer than he ever would’ve guessed.

“Take care of yourself, Cass,” his friend says, his eyes sad, voice dark with defeat.

“It’s too late for that,” Cassian mutters. He looks to the ramshackle scrap of the town below, thinks of Jyn trapped there, probably hurt, hiding and hunkered down and beset by the dead. Or worse. His muscles tense at the vivid image, the blood in his veins boiling over with determination.

He hefts his rifle up on his back and jogs down the muddy track without a further word or look.
