Okay, I'm back from my long walk. I had some leftovers and some wine so I'm chill. I found myself still thinking about today's post and the commentary. I said it was not real, but it was a very realistic situation. I'm just amazed at how quickly we forget just how far these two have come and the generational curses they both have worked hard to break. Especially if you've read Things Fall Apart from the beginning. We echo "GROWTH" in the comments when they're winning but are quick to fight them when they get it wrong. Hope is a good kid and very smart. I'd like to think some of that had to do with having loving parents invested in her well-being. These two aren't intentionally hell-bent on screwing up their kids. They've actually been very supportive even if met with some resistance (cough cough Darren).
These two had absolutely no point of reference on how to parent. There is no parenting for dummies to prepare you for teenagers. Both Indya and Darren saw firsthand what the streets will do to you. So the idea of their baby girl out there scared the shit out of them. It's terrifying. Then, when you find them safe and sound, the scared turns to anger, like Hope's audacity to threaten Indya "Unless you and dad have plans to make me feel like a failure again". No ma'am you don't get to do that. Did Indya go too far? Well, that's still debatable. We all can't be Claire Huxtable when we're reading our kids for filth. I'm not going to disregard her feelings as a mother just because we don't want to hurt Hope's feelings. All of a sudden the Hopes of the world want to cancel their parents because of one bad argument. One argument negates all the support leading up to that. Everybody wants grace but nobody wants to dispense grace. No one seems to acknowledge the real danger Hope put herself in. This could have taken a very dark turn. One that would have set Indya and Darren back to zero. Hope is their first everything so they are bound to get some things wrong but let's not disregard all that they have gotten right. That's all I'm saying.
I.....
