Ilhan Omar immigrated to the United States as a refugee child in 1995, when her family was granted asylum and arrived in New York before settling in Virginia and then Minnesota.

Her family escaped a brutal civil war, displaced over a million refugees from 1991-1992 alone. The crisis peaked in 1992 with a severe drought exacerbating starvation, resulting in up to 300,000 deaths. The Somali conflicts of the 1990s displaced millions, creating one of the world’ largest refugee crises.

Omar followed the legal process, and became a citizen.

Meanwhile, Melania came here as an adult model on a tourist visa, worked without authorization, and later got an “extraordinary ability” visa.
