Cal Tops Utah 4-1 in First Round

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The 23rd-ranked California women's tennis team booked a spot in the NCAA Championship second round and extended its lead in the all-time series with No. 39 Utah to 14-1 when it defeated the Utes 4-1 in the first round Friday at Marks Tennis Stadium. Cal sophomore Naomi Xu posted a three-set win over Emma Valletta to clinch the victory.   The Golden Bears – who improved their record to 13-7 – next face host and No. 13 USC on Saturday. Utah ended its season at 15-10.   In doubles, the first-time Cal duo of freshmen Johanne Svendsen and Mille Johnna Moerk beat Utah's Emmie Moore and Kaila Barksdale 6-4 on Court 3. But the Utes won on Courts 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point.   The Bears started off strong in singles, winning five of six first sets. Cal senior All-American Berta Passola Folch – ranked 22nd – tied the overall match 1-1 when she bested Sara Akid 6-3, 7-5 on Court 2, and then Moerk gave Cal a 2-1 lead when she beat Moore 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4. Sophomore Anya Murthy — a former Trojan playing at USC for the first time since transferring to Cal — made the score 3-1 when she beat Utah's Hayley Roberts 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 on Court 6.   Xu earned her first clinching win of the season when she beat Valletta 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to end the match.   Cal plays USC for the second time this season on Saturday at noon PT, with the winner of that match advancing to next week's NCAA Super Regionals. The Bears defeated the Trojans 4-2 on Jan. 31 in the second match of the regular season in Berkeley.

In a busy week for California Golden Bears football, the team accepted a bowl invite, confirmed a new head coach, and found out their QB will not be leaving.

HONOLULU BOUND BEARS

Cal has accepted an invitation to play in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl and will face the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Christmas Eve.

It marks the third straight bowl appearance for the Golden Bears (7-5), which is the program's longest bowl streak since it went to seven straight bowl games from 2003-09. Overall, it's the 27th bowl appearance in school history.

After appearances at the Independence Bowl in 2023 and the LA Bowl in 2024, Cal will play the Warriors (8-4) at the Ching Athletics Complex (due to Aloha Stadium still under renovation) in Honolulu on December 24th.

"We are excited to accept an invitation from the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl and continue our season in Honolulu," Cal football general manager Ron Rivera said. "This is a reward for the hard work our student-athletes put in during the season, and we are looking forward to competing against an excellent Hawaii team in front of a nationally televised audience."

The Bears and Rainbow Warriors have met five times previously, with Cal holding a 3-2 series lead. In the last meeting between the teams in 2016, the Bears notched a 51-31 victory in a game that was played in Sydney, Australia.

This will be Cal's second appearance in a bowl game in Honolulu and first since it played in the Aloha Bowl in 1996.

LUPOI RETURNS TO CAL

Tosh Lupoi, a former California defensive lineman and assistant coach known for his dynamic recruiting ability and who has enjoyed extensive success both in college and the NFL, has been named the new California head football coach, GM Ron Rivera announced.

Lupoi comes home to Berkeley to become the 35th head coach in program history after spending the past four seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Oregon. He also won a pair of national championships during a five-year stint at Alabama, where he served as outside linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. Lupoi has additionally spent time on the coaching staff at the University of Washington and in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Lupoi was a defensive lineman for the Golden Bears from 2000-05. He went on to coach Cal's defensive line from 2008-11, making him the youngest full-time coach in California football history when he joined the staff at age 26 in 2008. Under Jeff Tedford, Lupoi proved to be a strong recruiter and talent developer, helping the Bears bring in two top 20 recruiting classes and producing two first-round NFL draft picks on the defensive line. The Bears were ranked in the Top 20 for all four of those seasons and Top 10 twice.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Tosh and his family back home to Berkeley as our head football coach," Rivera said. "Tosh is a true Golden Bear, and he understands and embraces the challenges and privileges of being a Cal student-athlete. His strong character, tireless work ethic, coaching acumen and recruiting talents all make him the perfect fit to lead us into the next great chapter of Cal football."

Lupoi has directed one of the top defenses in the country during his time at Oregon. The Ducks finished the 2025 regular season ranked third nationally in total defense (251.6 YPG), passing defense (144.3 YPG) and passing yards allowed (1,732), while ranking eighth in scoring defense (14.8 PPG) and 20th in rushing defense (107.25 YPG). On Tuesday, he was named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award - given to the nation's top assistant coach - for the second consecutive season.

"I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to come home," Lupoi said. "Cal is a special place that shaped me, and it's an incredible honor to return to Berkeley and lead this football program. I'm energized by the challenge ahead and excited to unite our players, alumni, and supporters. We will build a tough, disciplined, and relentlessly competitive team that represents Cal with pride, while always committing to academic excellence. I can't wait to get to work and compete every single day for this program and this community. It's time!"

After Tosh Lupoi was introduced as Cal’s head coach Dec. 5, he flew to Hawaii to meet with Sagapolutele, with the purpose of making sure the lefty would stay with the Bears. The next day, Sagapolutele announced his commitment to return to Berkeley, in part because of what Lupoi had detailed as his vision for the program in general and for Sagapolutele specifically.
