Extremes of economy of the BMW i8
I've just ticked over 1500 miles in my crazy BMW i8. It might be a game-changer in the world of supercars, but how it uses the multiple power trains causes massive variations in fuel consumption.
The trip computer shows an extended hoonery session on empty A and B roads just after dawn. "Sport mode" was permanently engaged and full use was made of both leccy and petrol to hurl the car in full 4 wheel drive mode out of slow corners.
By God it shifts, and stops and turns like a dream. It also drank super-unleaded fuel at 27mpg, the worst consumption by a country mile.
It's not as bad as previous cars I've owned, they previously might have struggled to better 15mpg under the same conditions - think large capacity V8 stuff with 400bhp plus.
In stark contrast to this, it compares to an outstanding 235mpg recorded last Monday as I pootled around urban West Yorkshire. Nuts.
The overall average is still better than 40mpg, which is super impressive.
More BMW i8 Fuel Efficiency Madness: 128mpg
Fairly normal midweek journey for me, not driving Miss Daisy, but slow going urban roads that also included a 3 mile uphill dual carriageway. Gave me 128mpg and over 5 miles per kW!
Overall, since I got the car a month ago, and over 1200 miles I’ve averaged 42.2mpg - including a fair amount of heavy right foot, and without a home charge point. Can I get the average past 45?
First Proper Electric-Only Journey in the i8
My i8 has just tripped over 1000 miles, so I can say goodbye to the running-in period. It’s also released a few extra horses plus the launch management system that gets the 0-60 figure under 4 seconds. Exciting, eh?
So, my first journey after passing this milestone ended up as a 15 mile journey and the car decided to do it entirely in ‘leccy mode.
The journey was up and down (say 700ft) and the i8 seems to use a kilowatt every 4 miles. This is not as good as some of the compact electric cars but still pretty good and (I think) better than a Tesla!
That’s no fuel burned, no dead dinosaurs consumed, zero carbons, no nasty emissions. Ok, the roads were busy and my maximum speed was 50 mph.
My old car (a Merc C63) would have used over a gallon of fuel and emitted billions of nasty carbons. Result.
Plugging in when I got home didn’t half spike the home consumption of electricity - still, I’m on a sustainable tariff so all those electrons come from wind, hydro, biomass, pumped and solar so still no carbons used.
Real World Rural “Thrashing it” Fuel Consumption for my BMWi8: 34mpg
The Jekyll & Hyde nature of the i8 never ceases to amaze me. On one hand it’s a quiet, comfortable and classy urban cruiser that tops 60mpg … and on the other it’s a wicked snarly back road scratcher that has brilliant handling and all the performance you’d ever need.
It might lack a little high-speed grunt but it’s super-stuff chassis and low weight work a treat on UK roads whilst still returning 50 to 75% better fuel consumption than a contemporary Porsche, Aston or Ferrari. Nuts.
Ok, it’s no track day slayer - but who in their right mind is going to drive 10/10 on track with a £100k car. Idea: It might suit a lap or two of the ‘Ring.
Charging the BMW i8: Permanent 32amp Charger Installed on the drive.
A very professional, 4hr installation today to install a new internal metal (fireproof) consumer unit to supply the 32amp charger (free from BMW, thanks) and an external IP56 twin socket.
It’s a large thing, with BMW badges to add to the snob value - but it does its job well. And it’s a lot easier and faster to charge the i8.
