fate had a funny way of bringing them together. it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary to run into each other while working angles and trying to dig up information, but --
well, perhaps the new york public library was a first for them. matt bit back a smirk when he first heard her heartbeat , still memorized from their last mission together.
“ and just when i was prepared to find a kind librarian to be my eyes , must be my lucky day. ” leaning on his walking stick , he settled a hip against the nearest empty desk. “ how've you been , nat ? ”
“This is dangerous, isn’t it?” / my orihime or my rukia for Ichigo :D

He knew that she was right; it was hazardous, even for the most experienced of the Soul Society. Still, that had never stopped him from doing what he believed was right or trying to shield his friends and family from whatever threats came their way. If anything, the acknowledgment of the situation only further fueled his desire to safeguard them against all odds. With Aizen's attempts at attacking the Soul Society and Karakura Town, he knew they couldn't sit on the sidelines anymore.
❝ Dangerous or not, I will protect my friends, ❞ came Ichigo's response, one hand resting on the hilt of his Zanpakutō. His expression was hardened with determination, and his tawny gaze was fixed on Rukia's countenance. ❝ A certain someone once told me that I would have to be willing to go to any length, even to sacrifice my own life, if I were to become a Soul Reaper. I told you I chose to be different — not just because I won't blindly follow the Soul Society, but because I want to become stronger for those I care about. ❞
Taking a step forward, he subtly scanned her features before he continued. ❝ Whether you like it or not, they've become your friends, too. ❞ Ichigo hesitated briefly, then a hint of challenge laced his words and a glimmer of conviction lit up his eyes. ❝ So, Rukia… are you in or not? ❞
Requested starter from Joel Miller to Tess. @go1dsun
Smuggling. It could be pretty rewarding if the job went right. But if it went south? Things could get real messy real quick. Unfortunately, tonight things had very much gone wrong. What was supposed to be a simple drop off of medical supplies and ammo just outside of Boston’s QZ had turned into quite the struggle. Infected had quickly overwhelmed them, forcing both Joel and Tess to retreat into some sort of office building. They’d barely made it in unscathed— but luckily no bites. Joel could still feel the adrenaline pumping through his veins as he quickly barricaded the door behind them with a metal cabinet. Hell, he could still hear the Runners roaming around outside, some of them screeching and fiercely banging against the door in futile attempts to gain access.
They weren’t in the clear yet. Sucking in a breath, Joel turned to look at Tess, lungs burning from how fast he’d ran. He was getting too old for this shit. “We ain’t got much daylight left, Tess. And they’re not gonna give up tryin’ to get in.” It was only a matter of time before a big enough horde of them gathered with enough force to barge their way in. They needed to find a way out and fast.
“C’mon. Gotta be a way out somewhere.” Lightly jogging towards the stairs, Joel began to climb the steps. “Unless you were thinkin’ we pitch here for the night if we find somewhere safe enough. It’s your call.” He trusted her judgement better than his own. After all, there was a reason Tess was the brains while he was the brawn. However, with night gaining on them and with curfew already in full effect back in the QZ? It would be impossible to sneak back in there undetected by the soldiers. Regardless, they were in quite the sticky situation.
