Chapter 0: Prologue
Nadia (The player) talks about what led her to the abandoned kindergarten.
When I was young, Banban's Circus was just one of the countless colorful kids shows on public broadcast television: a bunch of clown-themed characters of unidentifiable species teaching me and every other 90s kid with no cable colors of the rainbow and ABC's. Sometimes the animation was stiff, and the voice actors probably weren't paid quite enough, but something about it just kept pulling me in, even when I started getting older. Being a teenager in the early 2000s was harrowing enough on its own, so having to act like I thought the show was stupid and childish when I hit middle school was just another thing on my plate.
Frustrating. I think that's the only word for it. Hitting age 17 and still having an attachment to a ripoff of Sesame Street was frustrating.
I think I saw something in them that no one else did. The characters, I mean. The world they inhabited was nonsensical and thrown together, but something told me that maybe, behind the scenes, there was one person on that team who cared about the cast as much as I did. One person who was trying so desperately to have their vision be seen, their voice be heard. Or, maybe, I just wanted to be right in thinking there was more to it all, and I was just attaching meaning when there was none.
Now that I'm older, of course, I know the show wasn't anything special. Any colorful characters moving on a screen was enough to occupy me at that age. But back then? ... Back then, they were just as real to me as my own parents. Sometimes even more so. I won't point fingers and call my parents horrible people, because they weren't. We weren't rich. They were trying their best. But I did become something of a maladaptive daydreamer as a result of them being away so often. A small part of me is glad for it, it gave me an imagination. The other part resents them for leaving me to get attached to that show.
Imagination didn't do much for me in the long run, ended up as a sanitation worker after all— not exactly a rich, artistic career. But, like my parents, I wanted to do well enough to give my kid a decent life.
Alice was… my whole life. Adopted her before she was even a year old, raised her on my own, spent as much time with her as I could. All of that love, all that trying to be better than my own parents, and in the end I got less than ten years with her. That shouldn't happen. A mom shouldn't outlive her kid.
It was that fucking kindergarten.
What was I supposed to do? Assume the worst of the daycare center themed after my childhood obsession? All I wanted to do was share what I loved with my kid. All I wanted was to connect with her. One day in there, and I never saw her again.
Looking back now, I wasn't feeling well that day. I almost stayed home, took a short leave and had Alice start the next day. I'm not superstitious, I don't believe in any cosmic entity no matter how much my family tried to convince me, but I think something was trying to stop me from leaving her there.
The floor gave out, simple as that. It wasn't a well made building, cheap and cobbled together just like the show had been, but I'd heard good things: how kind the staff was, how colorful it was. And then the floor gave out. Three staff and 5 kids dead, the rest either injured or scared out of their minds, and I just had to call work and ask for the week off for mourning. They only gave me 4 days.
It closed. Obviously. It was only open for around a year and a half before the accident, and frankly it should've been less, but maybe that's just my hindsight talking. Maybe it's unhealthy, but I haven't emptied out her room, and I haven't gotten rid of that red clown plush I sewed for her.
And now, through either some cruel irony of the universe, or just my job screwing with me, they want me to go to that busted up old daycare and clean up anything dangerous. I think my boss could tell I wanted to melt his skull with my eyes when I got the assignment.
But what the hell, right? It's an old, empty building. Nothing alive has been in there for 10 years except maybe some rats. I'm getting in, getting out, and then I'm never going to think about Banban's kindergarten again.

The mascots at the lower levels were never mascots at all, but instead pulled themselves together with disorganized pieces of fabric and made their own worlds underground. Here’s the court of the Queen!
Here's a Bday design that's a bit more accurate to the mascots suits of old. His full name's not official I thought of it on the spot and also the bird is a bittern and it's trying to look like a reed
Here's also some idea for Opila! Now named either Bookbird or Keeperbird/Keeper. She looks a lot like another design I have but she was actually made first (and I'm gonna make her more distinct later).

If I'm honest..? It was like having grown another shadow...wherever I was he showed up...coincidentally. We were already closely working together...but he showed up at places like the unofficial smoking balcony....and Sergei doesn't smoke!..
I thought it was the setup to some elaborate prank...Every time he would ask if we wanted ta go out for a beer I made up a new excuse....After all what would HE want from someone like me..From the guy who's name he couldn't remember?Well....eventually he bumped into me...LITERALLY and...well yer grandmother can only die so many times before it becomes a shite excuse...
