Scrap of paper onto which I scribbled the four Go-Betweens songs performed by Jack Frost (Grant McLennan and Steve Kilbey) March 20, 1991 in Cambridge, MA at Nightstage.
As an avid fan of both The Church and The Go-Betweens, this new band—Steve Kilbey of the former, and Grant McLennan of the latter—was a dream match-up. While I’d seen The Church a couple of times before, plus Steve Kilbey solo, I’d never seen Grant McLennan live. And I’d tried! A couple of years prior, when the Go-Betweens were playing The Paradise as part of their 16 Lovers Lane tour, I was turned away at the door for being underage. And then the band broke up! I was heartbroken.
Thankfully, this show at Nightstage was an 18+ affair. And I’d just turned 18 two days before. Though, truthfully, I was never turned away from an 18+ gig when I was even younger. Door people tended not to care about your age enough to card you if you said you weren’t drinking, which would be the case for all the 18-to-20-year-olds in attendance.
I must have scribbled down this list of Go-Betweens songs played that night by memory, on the train ride home. I guess I didn’t want whatever else was on the page, as I neatly cut it out in a weird shape and tossed it in a pile of other papers.
