a little side adventure I drew of my The Devoured Year OCT character Tylos Flossfey, featuring Gobhar and Menteuse! Working with my fellow artist Unidentified Silly, we wrote two comics about our characters interacting! They wrote the first one, which can be found here! It is such a treat!
image descriptions: A deer walks through a forest, ears perking up at the sound of people. Narration says, “my dear friend, I can’t stop thinking about these strange folks I crossed paths with. I heard their voices again while on my journey, mingled with the smell of death.” The deer transforms into Tylos, a humanoid druid made from sugar paste with a shaggy mullet and plants growing out of him. He has spiked bear-like forearms. He looks over a tree and sees Gobhar, an armored woman with goat horns poking out of a helmet, and Menteuse, a vampire with a face made out of cork and a glass body that swirls with wine. Gobhar stands guard with her hammer as Menteuse drinks from a dead jelly donut man. He wipes his face with a handkerchief. Tylos remarks, “from the looks of it, at least they didn’t let it go to waste. End image description 1 of 12.
Tylos steps on a twig, and Menteuse looks up with suspicion. Upon seeing Tylos hiding behind a tree, he tells Gobhar, “kill it.” Gobhar springs into action, hammer raised above her head. End image description 2 of 12.
The hammer slams on the tree Tylos hides behind, sending him flying off the page. With a “FWOOSH,” he turns into a crow and flies around Gobhar, dodging a swing from her hammer. End image description 3 of 12.
Tylos leaps back into his humanoid form and pants, only to see Gobhar charging towards him with a punch. Tylos blocks it with his bear-like forearms, his body shattering into a rabbit that hops away. End image description 4 of 12.
Rabbit Tylos dodges thrown debris, until a rock hits him. He reverts to his humanoid form and crashes into Menteuse. End image description 5 of 12.
Tylos and Menteuse are unconscious. Tylos awakens and murmurs, “huh…” He sees Menteuse’s wine-glass hand. End image description 6 of 12.
Tylos suddenly springs up and grabs Menteuse’s hand with amazement. Menteuse is unhappy and yells, “G-Gobhar!” Tylos raises the hand to the sky, light reflects through the wine-filled glass hand. He narrates, “you’d call me a fool for admiring an enemy mid-battle, but from everything I’ve seen in nature, this was simply…So cool.” Tylos says the last two words aloud as he admires Menteuse’s hand, thinking about dewdrops on leaves, glasswing butterflies, and honeypot ants. End image description 7 of 12.
Tylos and Menteuse exchange an awkwardly silent moment. Menteuse finally speaks and asks, “what are you?” Tylos says with a neutral, cheerful expression, “I’m Tylos!” He is then suddenly grabbed by the neck, his eyes cartoonishly bugging out. He meets Gobhar face-to-face and says, “nice to meet you?” End image description 8 of 12
Menteuse face palms and says, “I didn’t mean your name.” Tylos, still held by the neck, says, “Oh! I guess I’m what you call a druid. I met this cool purple lady who was one, and I wanted to be just like her!” To the side is a doodle of Pixie the druid, with the words “wow, amaze,” around her.” Tylos continues as if he’s still not being held by the neck, sheepishly scratching the back of his head. “To tell the truth, I’ve never seen anyone like you before, I think you’re pretty cool! Also, I realize we got off the wrong foot the first time we met. I’m sorry about that. I only compared you to an octopeach because while you can survive off mimicry, the person under all that pomp seems pretty neat.” To the side is an octopus shaped like a peach. There’s an asterisk that adds context, saying, “see: Unidentified Silly’s comic.” Tylos continues, with a bit of a solemn expression. “Still, I can’t fault you and your friend for going after me. Maybe that mimicry plays a big role in keeping you alive…” End image description 9 of 12.
Off-screen, Tylos continues. In his mental space, he’s thinking about blood-splattered teeth. He says, “I…Knew a friend who had to do some hard stuff to survive.” Tylos looks down with a pained expression. Menteuse is annoyed, but snaps his fingers. Tylos drops to the ground as Menteuse stands over him, saying, “this was a waste of energy and time. Gobhar, get my hat and find a place to hide this body.” End image description 10 of 12.
Menteuse continues to talk. “I appreciate the compliment, as unorthodox as it was, but you’re wrong about one thing.” He bends over to meet Tylos’ gaze. “I am not alive, and you’ll end up in a similar position if you utter a word of what you saw to anyone.” Tylos, meanwhile, is unfazed but still nervous. “Oh, okay. Could I make one suggestion, though?” He points off to the distance at the dead jelly donut man, who lays in a Family Guy death pose. “The vanilla vultures prefer if you put your kills where they can smell them. Looks more natural that way, too.” Gobhar stands with Menteuse’s hat and is silent for a beat, then snickers. End image description 11 of 12.
Gobhar takes her helmet off. She is a scarred, curly haired woman with goat horns. She says, “we’ll remember that next time, kid. Look, how ‘bout you show us a good place to leave him?” Tylos admires Gobhar in awe, silently thinking, “so cool.” He replies aloud, “o-okay! I think I know a spot by the mountains.” Tylos is then seen tying the dead body up. A banana horse and carrot horse snort and whinny. The comic ends on Tylos driving the cart with a worried expression, saying “I think he’s falling off the cart again.” Gobhar replies, “don’t worry about it. Keep driving.” End image description 12 of 12.
