The Old Norse name ‘Laufey’

I haven’t done one of these in a while and I saw something floating around about the meaning of Laufey’s name. This is another case where there are an abundance of possibilities.

Laufey, genitive Laufeyjar. Pronounce roughly “LAO-voy” for ON, “LOY-vay” for Icelandic.

Normally in Old Norse lauf means ‘leaf’ and is cognate to the English word (both < PGmc. *laubą). However some linguists have connected it instead to a root appearing in ON leyfa ‘to permit, allow; to praise,’ Gothic galaufs ‘valuable’ on the basis of its appearing in the context of names, especially in Old High German (Loubger, Heriloub). Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon also mentions the possibility of a linguistic relationship with the Finnish names Louhi, Loviatar, the first the witch queen opponent of the protagonists of the Kalevala and the latter the mother of illness, spirit of death and disease and daughter of the deities of death (and neither entirely distinguishable from each other outside of the Kalevala).

The second component of the name ey, Scandinavian øy, is a common naming element (Nordisk runnamnslexikon lists Gulløy, Hlīføy, Ingiøy, Kætiløy, Sandøy) and as a naming element it is not necessarily traceable back to any one of the several homonyms ey. These three different words ey mean ‘island,’ ‘luck’ (runic auja), and ‘ever.’ Though only ‘island’ has a feminine declension there is no strong reason to believe that a spontaneous shift to a feminine declension for the neuter ey ‘luck’ would not be possible (see also: Bil, an otherwise neuter name of a goddess). Because of how common it is as a naming element it might not have been thought of in terms of a literal meaning.

Taken altogether it seems most reasonable to suggest that the name was already ambiguous in meaning in Old Norse. If lauf- ‘permission; praise’ were original a shift to ‘leaf’ by Old Norse times is certainly possible. If from ‘permission; praise’ it suggests that Laufey as a figure is either somewhat older than Old Norse or her name is influenced from elsewhere, as lauf is not otherwise used as a naming element in Old Norse like it is in Old High German. We might suppose that lauf and nál, her other name, reflect and draw contrast between ‘leaves’ and ‘needles’ respectively but the normal word for pine needles is barr and I am not aware of nál being used in this sense in Old Norse although it can be in Modern Icelandic and nál does get used in reference to the first sprouts of grass. The name Nál is a whole other can of worms that I’m not going to get into here.

Possibly related is the sword of Böðvarr bjarki, known from Hrólfs saga kraka, which is called Laufi. It’s not clear what this meant either; it could be drawing a physical comparison to a metal blade and a ‘leaf’ (laufblað ‘leaf-blade’) or possibly draw on the same source as Gothic galaufs ‘valuable’ or something else entirely.

Going off of what I posted here, Maria Kvilhaug is probably basically right about Old Norse people understanding the figures in myths as not distinct from the concept signified by their name, e.g. Logi wasn’t “the jötunn of fire” but just “fire.” I wonder if the Útgarða-Loki story works only because Logi and Hugi are also regular human names, so that the listener has no trouble seeing “a guy named Logi” - Elli was not a normal human name, and so she couldn’t be named until the big reveal at the end. The problem I have with Kvilhaug’s explanations are:

Not all divine names are transparent; some became opaque during the syncope period (550-ish to 700-ish or later); some became opaque as words the names were based on dropped out of the language (there is no ON þórr ‘thunder’); some could be analyzed as relayed to different, etymologically distinct homophones (Snorri did this); some like Ymir/Ýmir were probably perfectly understandable to Old Norse people but not to US, so we are prevented from confidently providing an explanation.

A consequence of the above is that meaning is not stable, not only changing over time and place but possibly with as many interpretations of mythic figures as people in the audience of the recitation of a myth.

(also she just leaves out a lot about some meanings being disputed, like Ymir for example).

So that we find deities whose names are not transparent in a sort of state of quantum superposition, both here and there (the analogy is not exactly correct because most of us will tend to weight the possibilities differently).

This is bad news for anyone who still maintains that there is a monolithic model of orthopraxy or rigid ideology, but good for development of a new religious movement built on, but not limited by, reconstructed Germanic pre-Christian paganism. It means our arguing and debating, creative interpretation, even our factual errors are more of a sign that we’re making progress than factual inerrancy would be in itself. Our reconstruction needs to account for pluralities.
