reminder that lucas is going to refuse to leave max's bedside to the point that he's denying himself basic self care because he wants to make sure he'll be there when (when, not if. when) she wakes up even if it means sleeping in an uncomfortable plastic chair and subsequently waking up with back pain in a too-cold hospital room with slightly less than edible food being served three times a day. even if it means he has to fight his friends to let him stay. even if it means he has to have clothes brought to him by his already extremely concerned parents. even if it means erica forcing him to take 10 minutes away for a shower and promising him she'll stay by max's side while he does. because he has to be there when max wakes up, because she's the only thing he cares about right now. and she will wake up, eventually, and lucas will make certain that he's right there when her hand squeezes back on his and the warmth returns to her skin and she's laughing and cracking jokes with him again, like those few glorious months in 1985 where she was, quite literally, the light of his life.

until then, he's staying put right where he is, in the uncomfortable plastic chair, in the too cold hospital room, always sitting adjacent to the bed holding the only reason he's kept fighting. and he's going to help her fight too.

In canon I don't think there's a ton of room for him to fully realize he has gender stuff going on - the man can't even fully recognize his bisexuality before Dying At Sea - but in a softer universe where the 1800s are maybe a bit kinder on everyone, where perhaps he knows and sees people who are gnc/trans, perhaps he can begin to think that maybe, maybe....
