THE SLAUGHTER

the sound of a thousand footsteps falling into line. a drumbeat is thrumming through all of them, moving them forward. your skin buzzes with it, the gunpowder residue, the cooling of once-hot metal in your hands. you were born with anger in your blood. you've gotten good at biting when you are cornered. you are wound rubber-band tight, ready to snap, ready to lash out. there is blood in your eyes, tinging your vision red. this fight inside of you is human nature. violence makes you powerful but you are also powerless against it. the music is getting louder now. once, someone was screaming. once, someone was crying. once, someone was laughing. now, the only sound is the music, and the scrape of metal against metal, and the distant gunfire. you hold a weapon in your hands. your hands are the weapon. you have never known anything but anger. you growl like a misbehaving dog. you fight over scraps like a stray. you disobey orders like a scared soldier. you live on a knife's edge, and life has taught you it is better to be the one slicing than the one getting sliced. soft things get broken and eaten and swallowed, so you make yourself sharper. this is how you get by. this is how you push forward, until one day you step on a mine that you buried, blown apart by your own anger. but until that happens, you will march to the music.
