     “  embarrassing stories ?  ” she couldn’t contain the chuckle that sounded from her throat. “ i happen to know a few, ”  she said , her lips curling into a smile . “ he refuses to drink alcohol. despises it’’s taste , so my other idiot brothers concocted a drink where the alcohol was hidden and within a few drinks he was absolutely tarnished. he tried to teleport--a skill of which he had no training at the time-- and succeeded , but the spell backfired on him and his clothing vanished , leaving him naked in the middle of town square . ”  curiosity struck within her now.  “ though , i can be rather protective of my littlest brother .  ”  perhaps he was too old to have his big sister protecting him , but here she was . would she ever stop ? absolutely not. “  to whom do i have the pleasure of addressing ? a girlfriend, perhaps ? ”

“come with me.  i want to show you something.”   zeus beckoned eileithyia to follow them, down a winding staircase and into a private garden, one that required a key.  when they stepped inside, it became clear what they had brought her there for.  a beautiful golden flower blossomed at the center of the garden, glowing slightly.   “i planted this here when i married your mother -- to honour her.  it still lives because when i asked demeter how to preserve it, she told me to water it with my own blood.  gruesome, but effective.  i was thinking...  perhaps i might plant one for each of you.  my children.  would that be nice, or is it a bit tacky?”

“i’m pretty sure its just in their DNA.”   hebe replied matter-of-factly, tossing hair over her shoulder.  she would have figured that answer was obvious, but eileithyia did seem to want to see the best in people.   “what happened?  don’t tell me this is about that guy from the bar.  anyone who says they’re a nice guy is most definitely not a nice guy.”

  “Even in a sea of children, I can recognize which ones are mine and the others that seemed to have wandered here. Probably little sea creatures that shifted into mortal bodies when they washed up on shore,” Tethys mused in a sing song tone before she peeked over the other side of a large rock on the beach her family currently occupied. 

  Tethys found Eileithyia, the young godling, behind it and laughed, “Well this time maybe not a sea creature but a princess.” She walked around the rock to then face her and lean down to her level, “I wasn’t expecting you. No word from your mother. Did you just show up by yourself again?”

   “ I don’t got any of those! ” he states with pride , small chest puffed out . he’d been asked before , usually while attempting to steal various snacks from the grocery store , kind strangers kneeling down , or a suspicious clerk keeping too close of an eye . after a few close calls getting caught some of the older boys at the home had graciously taught him what to say , and how to say it . but this was his first time practicing alone . and the hospital was , to his own dismay , not filled with snacks and treats . “ ‘nd I didn’t steal this . I borrowed it . ” he clarifies , holding up the oversized and stolen chocolate bar that was clutched tight in grimy hands. “ I’m not lost --- I . . . live here . ” that lie was a bit trickier --- as the words left his mouth he realizes how bad it sounded .

Like most ‘newborns’, her initial perspective of the world had been one of innocence. Now, knowing what humanity and what angels were capable of doing, she had a less optimistic view of both. She’d learned to trust a select few, and those she did were valued above everyone else. So, when the stranger arrived ( why did deities always give off the same aura? ), she barely managed to resist rolling her eyes. While the other clubgoers danced and drank, Scarlet eyed the other carefully until they were within earshot. “Didn’t expect to see the likes of you here.”
