Like its predecessor, Doom Eternal makes you feel like a monster-shredding badass--not just because you're the strongest Doom Slayer, but because you're also the smartest.”

Both could never dream of matching the surprise or legacy of their immediate predecessor, but they each confidently expand on the historic foundations those games set. Using fast-paced first-person shooting as the framework, each sequel has wildly improved level design, a wider selection of demons to massacre, and a larger arsenal that come together to refine its core identity in the smartest, most respectful ways possible. However, Eternal is more ambitious than its 1994 counterpart, pushing even further and creating one of the best first-person shooters ever made in the process. The Doom Slayer has faced many nightmarish opponents and toppled them all, yet his greatest victory might be slaying the impossibly high expectations set by his genre-defining precursors.”

“Doom Eternal genuinely doesn’t give much of a crap what you think of it. It doesn’t care if you’re hardcore or not because it knows full that if you’re not, then it’s not for you. It’s loud and brash and hellishly violent, but above all it’s 100% video game. It’s not trying to be an interactive movie, political commentary or thinly-veiled ad campaign; it’s a game about killing demons as quickly, as messily, and as efficiently as possible. It wants you blast your way through every one of its gargantuan levels (and believe me, some of these levels really are huge) with a stupid grin that only leaves your face when you’re scowling with rage at a sudden and deliberate spike of difficulty. Doom Eternal might not be the perfect video game, but it absolutely is the perfect Doom game.”

DEATH STRANDING - REVIEW ROUNDUP!

Happy Death Stranding week everyone! Anyone else feeling GOOD? We’re feeling GOOD. No feelings of desperation here at all. We’re not even all that bothered to be honest. Honest. HONEST. Awwwww just give us it NOW PLEASE THANKS WHY NOT. As you can see the current mood here is actually far from good. We (physically) can’t wait for Kojima time this Friday when this beautiful creation drops. But it’s a whole 3 days awayyyyyyy.

All is not doom and gloom however... The big names (who’ve already had their copies and the opportunity to taste what looks like perfection) have released their scores. We’ve bulked them together in one care package for all of you on the fence. Have a read and you’ll do the pre-order deed!

“Death Stranding is one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s smart, it’s well-produced, and it just feels good to play. It’s damn cool. I don’t think any other game made me think to myself, “Damn, that was powerful,” as many times as Death Stranding did. Sure, there’s a lot of games that have some point to make. I don’t want to downplay anyone else’s work. However, Death Stranding will get you thinking about some stuff. I’ve played through it twice, and there are still things I’m turning around in my head.”

“Most of the time, however, our focus falls where Kojima conducts it. He is a precisian, honing his love of small, simple actions. It’s there when we see the cigarette smoke trickling from Mikkelsen’s mouth, or Mama cradling a baby that isn’t there. These seem inconsequential until, days later, you realise they haven’t left your mind. Kojima once described the video games of the 1980s, when his career began, saying, ‘It was like the era of the silent films. Games were composed of simple actions like those seen in old Chaplin or Keaton movies: running, jumping, digging, throwing.’ In many ways, they still are. Death Stranding certainly is, and it’s filled with things that must be seen. My guess is that all its clunky moments will be lost in time, like cargo in rain.”

“Kojima also hasn't lost sight of his cinematic roots, providing four levels of difficulty, including "very easy," which I'll transcribe right now: "Recommended for those with little or no action game experience. Gameplay at this difficulty is only very mildly challenging, allowing almost anyone to make it to the end of the story." Emphasis mine! What a subtle dunk. As usual I forged ahead on normal mode, but at any point, you can swap. Accessibility!Death Stranding is not the overly-strange inaccessible walled garden the marketing has made it out to be. It's weird, don't get me wrong! But anyone with a surface-level understanding of surrealism in art should be able to acclimate to what is essentially a playable Hollywood production.”

“Death Stranding is an ambitious game, featuring so many different systems and ideas, but it never falls under the weight of them. Whilst journeying across a crumbled America can be hugely frustrating at times, I never got bored of it, and through the powerful story, tense gameplay, and amazing action sequences, this will go down one of Kojima’s best. Taking time to build the necessary structures and adapt to the terrain is time consuming, but making sure you’re prepared will make your experience a much better one. Fabricating tons of cool equipment is exciting, especially when you earn the ability to build something new, and the message of connecting people provides an important backdrop for a wonderful game.”

“Death Stranding is a hard game to absorb. There are many intertwining threads to its plot, and silly names, corny moments, and heavy exposition belie an otherwise very simple message. That comes through much more clearly in the game's more mundane moments, when you find a desperately-needed ladder left behind by another player or receive a letter from an NPC thanking you for your efforts. It's positive without ignoring pain; in fact, it argues in both its story and its gameplay that adversity itself is what makes things worth doing and life worth living. It's a game that requires patience, compassion, and love, and it's also one we really need right now.”
