30 Lessons Drawn from the Miracles of Jesus - #1

#1. God is always willing to heal you (Matthew 8:2-3, 5-7; 15:29-31; 21:14; Luke 7:11-17; 13:10-13; John 5:2-9; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 14:1-6).

Healing, in this sense, includes deliverance from all ailments of body and soul. You see, Jesus is very easy-going and completely approachable, even now. He does not like to see people suffer. These records of healings also show us how much God desires to heal us, and the manner in which we are to approach Him - in humility and reverent awe - a leper came and worshiped Him (Matthew 8:2). God is always willing to heal. Matthew Henry, in his concise commentary, has this to say on Matthew 8:2-3: “In these verses, we have an account of Christ's cleansing a leper, who came and worshipped him, as one clothed with Divine power. This cleansing directs us, not only to apply to Christ, who has power over bodily diseases, for the cure of them, but it also teaches us in what manner to apply to him. When we cannot be sure of God's will, we can be sure of his wisdom and mercy. No guilt is so great, but there is that in Christ's blood which atones for it; no corruption so strong, but there is that in his grace which can subdue it. "To be made clean we must commend ourselves to his pity; we cannot demand it as a debt, but we must humbly request it as a favour. Those who by faith apply to Christ for mercy and grace may be sure that he is freely willing to give them the mercy and grace they thus seek. And those afflictions are blessed that bring us to know Christ and cause us to seek help and salvation from him. Let those who are cleansed from their spiritual leprosy, go to Christ's ministers and open their case, that they may advise, comfort, and pray for them.” The Compassionate Healer Even when Jesus went up on a mountain and sat down (Matthew 15:29), probably to rest awhile, we still see great multitudes trooping to Him, and Him healing them all just because He had compassion on them; for they were like a flock of ‘sheep without a shepherd’ (Matthew 9:35-36). Furthermore, although Jesus was very cross with the money changers and sellers in the temple (Matthew 21:12-14), His annoyance at them still did not keep Him from doing part of the work He came to the world to do. When the blind and the lame came to Him, He still had a desire and compassion to heal them (v. 14). No-one invited Jesus, yet He healed people out of sheer compassion and a willingness to heal. We read about Him swinging into action out of compassion for a widow whose only son had just died (Luke 7:11-17). He didn't even wait for anyone to ask Him before He raised the young man from the dead. (Just as a side note or bonus, this is the only verse in the whole Bible in which the city of Nain is mentioned. It’s a good question for a Bible quiz.) The Woman with the Spirit of Infirmity and the Crippled Man Jesus again encounters another person, ‘a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up’ - Luke 13:11; such pain, such misery, such suffering, for such a long time. Only a saviour, whose heart is aflame, with love could take all that infirmity away; and He did not disappoint. Another record of healing is that of a man bedridden by a severe sickness for 38 years (John 5:2-9). We see Jesus healing him, even though the man had his faith in the wrong direction. He had been there by the pool waiting for the supposed angel to stir up the water. And he had been waiting a very long time. He had no one to help him into the pool whenever the angel of God stirred up the pool. Jesus was still not deterred in His determination and willingness to heal the man even when the man answered differently to the question He had asked him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’ (John 5:6-7) He is Still the Same How could a saviour, who went about doing good (Acts 10:38), ever cease from doing just that? It is incongruent with His nature not to do good. At the time when He walked the earth, notwithstanding the danger it posed to His life for “breaking the law,” even though He didn’t (Mark 3:5-6; Luke 14:3-4), He was still always willing to heal people wherever He went. ‘See what quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed on) us, that we should be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are!’ - 1 John 3:1 ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever’ - Hebrews 13:8. The Father has put forth an invitation to all to come to Him through Christ (See the Parable of the Great Banquet in Luke 14:15-24), and He has promised never to reject ANYONE who comes to Him - John 6:37.
