The Godzilla Gang (and queen)
Clockwork's Thoughts on Godzilla 2014
Seeing the reviews on bot Skylet's end and Des's, I took it upon myself to find an equal ground viewing of this film. I wasn't born a full fledged Big G fan like Skylert was, nor do I have knowledge of the past Japanese films and info like Des has...and to be fair I never saw the past movies save for Godzilla 1998 (which I agree is crap but the design was...okish for a giant mutate american reptile, but the cartoon was TONS better if I remember right) and this was my first official Godzilla viewing with a friend of mine...I liked it.
I can see the problems Des mentions and the reasons why people like/hate it but...hell didn't bother me that much. The big issues were the cop-outs with Godzilla fighting a Mutos and then HUMANS!...yeah it was stupid but the main human storylines were decent honestly, especially when me and my friend were joking about Walter White and Kickass teaming up with Godzilla to take on Bat Mutants. Speaking of the Muto's, their design was pretty cool, kinda like a bat crossed with a stealth jet and grew 200 times its size. Also I did find it kinda adorable to see both the Mutos have that love moment when they finally meet up...though that could just be animal instincts but eh. Also it was made better that the theater was empty for us to crack these jokes (mostly because there was one midnight showing AFTER the movie worn out its shine and said friend still had work until then.)
Also I LOVE the Godzilla design in this. Yeah its not a costume but the CGI works pretty well, you can even see the pain he's been going through after the fight in the finale, and that he really does look worn after all that , and when he was ready to fight, he looked piiiiissssed. That's the type of facial expressions I love to see. (Also the atomic breath was SWEET, we both wanted to see that happen ONCE in this film)
And something unrelated after viewing some other reviews, me and my friend thought this was Godzilla's son grown up or something given his old man died after being frozen to death cause he had a nuclear bomb heart in his chest. OR this IS the same Godzilla from a different timeline. Not sure on those but hey, small fan theory, I could be wrong.
So from a biased standpoint from someone who never saw an official Godzilla movie in theaters, I enjoyed myself, its a decent flick and I'm hoping to see Destroy All Monsters in the future, while still hoping for a Godzilla/Pacific Rim crossover in the future if possible. As for now, I'll wait for the DVD and see what special features they got.
Also, here are some of the jokes made:
#1:
*Mutos walks over to Las Vegas*
Me: You see, I knew the Mutos had a Gambling problem. Next thing you know the whole building is going to get smashed cause that Mutos wants to join in.
*Mutos crashes the building*
Friend: Like that?
Me: Yeah that.
#2:
*Godzilla roars and growls*
Me: Finally some action!
*cuts to humans*
Both: Bullshit!
Me: Ehh...give G some time, he needs to make a grand finale at some point.
#3:
*Godzilla swims under the ships*
Friend: You see, Godzilla's a nice guy, he swims under those ships to make sure they don't get tipped over.
*Godzilla starts to resurface and the two other ships nearly get tipped over*
Me: Guess they owed him money...
#4:
*Ford Brody kicks a valves and lets out some gasoline*
Friend: What do you think that guy is doing?
Me: Man he's about to TORCH THAT MOTHER-
*explosion*
Me:...perfect...timing.
Plot twist: The flying MUTO in the movie is the Giant Claw
