> setting: Elena’s clinic late at night
~~~~~~~~
In what had been a rarity over the last few weeks today had been a pretty quiet day. There hadn’t been as many patients today and most of them had been relatively low risk. So she’d sent the rest of the staff home an hour earlier than they normal got to leave. Leaving just Elena behind to run the routine nightly checks and close down the clinic for the night.
The soft click of the lock echoed through the empty hallways as Elena secured the medical storage area. That was the last in the series of nightly checks that she needed to run. She’d already checked the cleanliness of the exam rooms and made sure the charts for tomorrow were ready. Well as ready as they could be for a clinic that saw as many walk in patients as they did. Slipping off her lab coat Elena folded it up and put it over her arm.
Just as she was moving to lock up her own office for the night she heard a shuffling sound come from the waiting room. That peaked her attention as there wasn’t anyone that was supposed to be here right now except for her. Elena grabbed her Beretta M9 that had been her standard issue weapon during deployment from her purse and held it at the ready in her hands as she moved towards the waiting room.
Her finger wasn’t curled around the trigger quite yet as she wasn’t entirely sure this was a threat. However she was more than capable of shifting position and firing within moments. A quick reaction time honed into her by years of service that she hadn’t had to use in years. In the back of her mind she hoped this wouldn’t be the time she had to break that streak. Shifting the weapon to her right hand she used her left to open the door to the waiting room.
She called out as she cautiously opened the door, “Hello is someone there?”
