Fernweh (n), Literally "farsickness" or "longing for far-off places", as contrasted with Heimweh (“homesickness, longing for home”)

As it stands, with the extent of modern communication, the world is a small place (although Flann O'Brien was of a differing perspective). News, culture and sport from around the globe can be shared within seconds, right now I'm watching Canada and Germany in the U-20s Women's World Cup live from Edmonton, throughout the day I've been following events such as the goings-on in Ferguson, Missouri and the ISIS insurgency as if they were happening just up the road. With the advent and spread of technology like Google's Street View, you can pick a road in any of the world's well populated areas and drive down it as if you were really there. So bearing all this is mind, why does the spirit of Fernweh, or Wanderlust, still exist in the human psyche?

To offer a pseudo-psychological answer, it would probably be because we crave excitement. Travel is interesting. Even today it still carries a certain element of danger, if the recent trevails of Malaysian Airlines and the current rapid and worrying Ebola Outbreak are anything to go by, which is an attraction for some people. But the underlying attraction of travel is that there is nothing like first-hand experience. As Jack Kerouac writes in On the Road, a hymn of praise to the concept of Fernweh, "The best teacher is experience and not through someone's distorted point of view."

It's an idealistic song, but it's also a damn good one; good to listen to, good to dance to, good to sing along to. It's synth-driven, with an unflashy but catchy bass line underneath and a lively backbeat. Probably best played with the windows rolled down, driving down an unfamiliar road in a foreign country.
