MUSCLES TOO PRONOUNCED-WTF?
In this article Duntee Chand, a female athlete from India was bullied and traumatized in her journey to run professionally. She was criticized for looking too “male.” Therefore she was subject to countless invasive tests to check her testosterone levels. Though I understand there is some basis for testing an athlete to make sure they are abiding by the rules, testing a woman because she looks too male or masculine really strikes a chord with me. “Her muscles were too pronounced, her strides were too impressive for someone who was only 5 feet tall.” This claim is the problem with our society.
Duntee’s muscles being pronounced is a byproduct of her athleticism. It is the nature of her passion and it should not be something criticized, it should be applauded as it is the result of extreme hard work. Her strides being “too impressive”- excuse me, what?! Her running being impressive is what it is supposed to be as a professional athlete! Reading this was hard. It made me angry on her behalf. Someone who comes from very little and worked as hard as they can to be successful should be celebrated not ripped apart, especially not in a humiliating and public way as Duntee unfortunately was.
This article reminded me of the ad campaign video we watched in class titled #LikeAGirl.” This video had a quote in it that has stuck with me since. When asked what running like a girl means, one young girl replied “running as fast as I can.” That is what it should be. Males and females alike, trying their hardest in whatever it may be and being uplifted along the way not brought down. I hope that Duntee continues to run and does not stop after winning the silver but also goes for the gold.
