My research is finally cruising along. I have my third bibliography down and have two more to go. My third resource that I did my bibliography is “Global Consequences of Shark Decline” by Lenfest Ocean Program and showed how sharks are important to the ecosystem and stated different scenarios of how possible solutions to the problem could work. I learned some new things about the consequences of the shark population declining, but there was some repeat. Some information that was repeated was how the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean is at risk the most and how shark decline effects the food chain by having an imbalance of prey and predator which is putting some species to be endangered. I learned some new information including 2% of the shark population is extremely endangered facing extinction, 4% of the shark population is endangered, and 11% of the shark population is vulnerable to become endangered. This is shocking to me. I never imaged that the statistics would be that high considering that there are only 400 species of sharks. Another thing that I learned was the shark population can effect fisheries throughout the whole world since the fish we eat are being hunted more and their population is decreasing quickly. This worries me because if certain fish are being hunted in their ecosystem and by humans in large amount they will be facing extinction soon... After reading that I started to question why certain people hunt sharks. I understand they can seem scary and they sometimes bite humans, but why shark fin? I think maybe looking into an article that is on the side of shark destruction is good is something I should look into. Also I had my meeting today with my prof Josh and it went well and I feel prepared for my last 2 bibliographies. I feel confident on this project!
