Description

The painting portrays the Greek mythological figure Danaë, the daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos. After an oracle forecast that Acrisius would be killed by her son, he had her jailed in a bronze tower. However, as told by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses, Jupiter reached her in the form of a gold rain, impregnated her, and made her mother to Perseus.

Correggio portrays Danaë lying on a bed, while a child Eros undresses her as gold rains from a cloud. At the foot of the bed, two putti are testing gold and lead arrows against a touchstone.

QUARANZINE #40

QUARANZINE #40: Oswaldo García. The second zine of the day is also the first issue from Mexico. I met Oswaldo at the wonderful book fair and gathering Rrréplica in CDMX and we became fast publishing pals. It has been wonderful to watch his press Gold Rain evolve and create many new publications since then. We would have reunited at the L.A. Art Book Fair organized by Printed Matter earlier this month, but sadly you know why that didn't happen. Here Oswaldo provides a melancholy report from the state of his studio's location. The photo of playground equipment that cannot be used could have just as easily been taken a block from my home in Chicago. I should note that like a gringo fool, I missed the accent over the 'i' in Oswaldo's last name, but he was extremely cool about it. I hate making those kinds of mistakes.

QUARANZINE #83

QUARANZINE #83: Oswaldo García. When we last heard from Oswaldo way back in issue #40, he wrote about how the COVID-19 quarantine had made it difficult for him to go to his studio where he runs the RISO press Gold Rain. Here Oswaldo writes about his family and shares a radiant portrait of his parents. The photo is one of many great analog images that will be included in an upcoming book titled Familia that he has been working on during the pandemic. It won't be printed by Gold Rain though. Instead, Eva Parra from Calipso Press in Colombia has come to the rescue. Family is beautiful and important: both our biological families, and our artist publishing families.
