‘ so you must be the nephilim that’s got everyone abuzz these days. ’ 

head tilts, amber colored irises giving the boy a once over. was this really the son of lucifer? the power emanating from him seemed to say so, though nothing about him seemed to set off any internal alarm bells. if she didn’t know any better, he could have been just any normal teenager. for a being born of the divine, he came off surprisingly unassuming. 

‘ you poor thing. i’ve heard about the battle going on over who you will serve. that’s a weight no one should be forced to bear, much less a child. but, as i’m sure you’ve now realized, both heaven and hell only care about self preservation. it doesn’t matter what you want, only what they believe you can offer them. i am sorry that you have to be exposed to those cruelties at such a young age. childhood is supposed to be a time of fun, not of conflict.’

A long stretch of empty road lay ahead of the young redhead with nothing but sunshine and fresh air to keep her company.  The rare car would make its way down the lonely highway with footfalls carrying her closer and closer towards the next town, and a thumb held out in hopes of catching a ride.

Any town would do.  She went where the wind took her, never knowing the next destination, or purpose outside of trying to help people.

Carrying her things on her back; a backpack full of personal belongings, a guitar case and a violin case strapped to the back of that, she joyfully practices her singing as she imagines the notes she would play on her instruments to make the song her own.  Her current song: Meet me on the Battlefield carries broadly as she allows herself to sing as loudly and with as much passion as she’d like, putting her everything into it.

After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Fowlks discovered Corey Arnold (@arni_coraldo), a photographer and commercial fisherman who documents life out on the rough seas.

Lombard is a Brooklyn documentary photographer who has shot for numerous publications including WIRED, New York Times and Vanity Fair. She started with Alexis Gross (@alexisjadegross), a photographer whose gritty images of LA offer a fresh perspective. “Instagram is a place where everyone tries to sugarcoat their lives–glamorous vacations, avocado toast and perfect, loving relationships,” Lombard says. “In other words, for a lot of people, it’s pretty removed from reality. Alexis Gross’s work is about as real as it gets.”

After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Lombard discovered Zara Mirkin (@zaraeloise), a stylist and photographer whose fashion images always take you by surprise.

This week WIRED photo assistant Ruby Goldberg (@ruby_gold) takes us down the Instagram Rabbit Hole.

Goldberg began with Beijing Silvermine, a portfolio of negatives found in a Beijing recycling plant and curated by photographer Thomas Sauvin. Goldberg says she chose the Instagram partially out of jealousy. “I can truly only dream of finding half a million negatives. I just think the project is genius and really well executed,” she says. After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Goldberg discovered Marilyn Mugot, a French photographer whose feed is the perfect blend of melancholy and style.

This week photo editor Sarah Silberg (@sesilberg) takes us down the Instagram Rabbit Hole.

Silberg started with NY-based photographer Thomas Prior. She loves Prior’s ability to make an interesting photo of just about anything (like this amazing photo of a flip flop). After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Silberg ended on Q. Sakamaki, an Instagram full of stunning black and white street photography.

Lokke started with Molly Cranna, who’s recently shot for WIRED. She loves Cranna’s bright, poppy hues and funky subject matter, and how can you not like photos of creepy dentures on astroturf? After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Lokke ended on Emily Blincoe, an Instagram sensation known for her colorful, orderly photos of just about everything (including mushrooms).

At this moment there are 300 million people using Instagram, but none of them can take a good picture. OK, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but on a social media platform that’s full of food, babies and feet selfies, it’s sometimes hard to find the good photography. That’s why we’re starting the Weekly Instagram Rabbit Hole.

Each week, we’ll tap someone in the WIRED Photo family to pick an Instagram feed we know and love. We’ll then check out who that person follows, and who one of those people follows, and so on until we have five amazing new feeds for your consideration. Every week. You’re welcome.

We’re starting with Amy Lombard, a freelance photographer whose electric style has been used on WIRED as well as many other publications. She led us to some amazing and unexpected things, including a whole community of crazy cliff jumpers.
