goldenplatform replied to your post: mashkwi answered your question: Circumcised and...
Speaking of health risks, how exactly does circumcision help to prevent the spread of HIV?
The theorized mechanism is that there are cellular structures within the inner lining of the foreskin which take in pathogens as a sort of probe. I think the purpose is to get a head start on dealing with bacteria/viruses. I'm not a scientist though, so that's my rudimentary understanding. There might also be other factors, such as the relative thinness of that mucous membrane, or the fact that fluids can accumulate within the preputial pocket. I also don't know the estimated magnitude of this purported protection, or whether or not it's limited to African populations where it's been tested.
Sadly, this part of the penis is also highly sensitive and very extensive, so removing the foreskin involves a wholesale alteration of the organ. There are also some controversies about some of these recent studies, particularly in terms of how circumcision affects actual sexual practices, as well as the possibility of increased risk of male to female transmission due to a higher number of microscopic tears caused by the more rigid circumcised penises.
Ultimately, I'm fairly agnostic on this issue, because my view is that this potential benefit isn't enough to justify the non-consensual circumcision of children who are not anywhere close to being at risk. I also don't feel that most parens who are choosing circumcision for their children are really doing it for reasons such as immunological protection; to me they serve as justifications used to bolster lesser reasons. To demonstrate this I propose a hypothetical experiment where a parent takes their 5 year old child to a pediatrician who tells them that their child is perfectly healthy, and then proceeds to inform them of an experimental new surgery which may boost their child's HIV immunity during heterosexual sex by some limited degree. I feel that most parents would say "thanks, but no thanks", whereas about half are saying "yes" to circumcision nowadays.
Chaos is merely order waiting to be deciphered.
