The Gilded Shore
The boardwalk at Golden City Muscle Beach was a sea of neon swimsuits and tourists, but the atmosphere shifted the second the Wells, Kasper and Coach showed up. We weren't there for the sun; we were there for the spectacle.
By noon, they had claimed a stretch of the shoreline, Coach stood watching. He was in his Black Wet-Look Jammer-style bathing suit, his silver whistle resting against his chest and dark, mirrored aviators hiding his eyes. He didn't need to say a word; his presence alone drew the crowd.
Coach gestured towards the exhibition ring "Show them what you boys can do, 58! 90! Move!" Coach’s voice carried over the crashing surf.
Me and Kasper stepped into the "exhibition ring" that was marked out with heavy black nautical ropes. We were a study in high-performance synchronization. We were both rocking metallic gold-foil speedos that shimmering like mirrors, reflecting the midday sun back at the crowd. Kasper was my massive twin in the sun.
The crowd went silent as we approached a massive, salt-crusted driftwood log. It had to weigh at least 300 pounds.
"Together!" Kasper grunted, his massive hands digging into the wood.
We hoisted the log to our shoulders. The sun was scorching, our skin already slicked with a mix of salt spray and sweat that made every muscle fiber pop in high-definition.
"Press!" Coach barked.
We drove the log toward the blue sky, our quads shaking as we fought the shifting sand beneath our feet. Every muscle in my body was fired up, a localized sun of golden force. Through his dark lenses, I knew Coach wasn't watching the crowd; he was watching the way the gold foil stretched over our legs, his expression intense and proprietary.
"Secure the load," Coach commanded as we hit our tenth rep. We dropped the log with a bone-shaking thud, sending a geyser of sand into the air.
"Disperse," he added, a micro-command that immediately sent the crowd murmuring. We’d given them the Standard. Now the exhibition was over.
Me and Kasper stood on the water’s edge, salt and sand glinting on our skin as the sun started to set. We were the Wall that had just moved.
"Catch, jocks."
I looked up just in time to catch a cold bottle of beer, the condensation feeling like ice against my sun-reddened palm. Coach had materialized next to us, cracking his own bottle with a sharp, metallic snick. He looked at me, then Kasper, his expression unreadable behind those aviators, but the approval radiating off him was heavy and undeniable.
He didn't give a speech. He didn't offer praise. He just raised his bottle, a simple, silent salute to the "Muscle".
We clinked our bottles, the glass ringing over the sound of the Ocean. I leaned back against the sand dune, the cool beer soothing my throat, the sun washing over my gold-foil suit. Kasper was grinning, already working on his second bottle.
Coach stood between us, a dark, black-jammied anchor in the blinding gold. The Golden City skyline was silhouetted in the distance, but right here, on this private stretch of the Gilded Shore, the only thing that mattered was the Standard and the bond of brotherhood.
