A 'rubbed' 23kt water gilded frame profile. Rubbing is what it sounds like - rubbing the gold leaf off the gilded surface. What is really being done is actually a wearing-away of the leaf through gentle abrasion. Although four ought (0000) steel wool can be used, I prefer a paste of ethyl alcohol (or denatured if need be) and calcium carbonate. The paste is applied with pharmaceutical grade or pure cosmetic cotton. It dries quickly and when buffed off leaves a softened glow to the gold with the bole revealed. A good rub has various attributes and is gained through many steps along the way (i.e. good gesso and bole recipes, no brush marks in the bole, proper burnish, even hand in the rub through).
