The Irem Skins Game is the best golf game yet for the Super Nintendo.

I mean, it’s still a golf game. There’s nothing revolutionary here. The Irem Skins Game manages to avoid all the mistakes the other golf games made; the graphics are nice, there aren’t any weird technical problems, there are sound effects and music tracks, there are a variety of game modes, the game didn’t copy an earlier version to an alarming degree … it almost seems like praising this game is akin to handing out a participation award. Congrats, Irem! You didn’t poke an eye out!

The main attraction in this golf game is the Skins game mode, which is a jargoney way of referring to a cash game. Each hole has a cash value, and the golfer that gets the lowest score in the group earns that money. The golfer with the most money at the end of the round wins. I’ve never played a golf game that featured this mode front and center, so it was a novel experience for me. But the fact you have to sit through the computer golfers take their turns meant that there was a lot of waiting. The Irem Skins Game supports four players, so having real people playing would make this a less frustrating mode.

But still, the other modes are here if you just want to hit the ball into sand traps like I do. Or if you don’t want to deal with CPU players that will make every putt on the first try.

I enjoyed the time I spent with this game. But the gulf between The Irem Skins Game and my previous top recommendation, HAL’s Hole in One Golf, is as deep and as wide as a teardrop. It’s going to come down to personal taste more than anything.

After all, it’s just a golf game.

Jack Nicklaus Golf is a complete mess on a technical level.

When a course loads, the game draws the grass and then draws the tree and then draws any extras like the hole’s flag and then plops your golfer into the awful looking environment. Take your shot, and do this all over again. It takes forever.

Could you put up with this for an 18-hole round?

It’s shoddy and annoying. I can’t believe they released a game like this. I could understand if the game looked good, but it doesn’t. Even the ugly PGA Tour Golf is more visually satisfying. If Jack Nicklaus Golf played better than every other Super Nintendo golf game, I could see putting up with it. But the game doesn’t offer anything to make it worth playing. It plays like any other golf game but with extra waiting.

HAL’s Hole in One Golf remains the SNES golf simulation game to beat, but play any golf game over Jack Nicklaus Golf.

PGA Tour Golf is the third golf game released on the Super Nintendo. All three are functionally identical.

I feel bad slagging on these games to an extent; I’m far from a golf fan, so it’s possible there’s a great deal of nuance separating PGA Tour Golf, HAL’s Hole in One Golf, and True Golf Classics – Waialae Country Club from each other. I don’t see it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

What is here in PGA Tour Golf, though, are disappointing graphics and sound. The sound effects in particular don’t seem to have a lot of variety and are low quality. I can’t say too much about the music because I never heard any, even with the option turned on. The courses look splotchy and undetailed, which is made worse when the game overlays the super-detailed golfer on the course when you’re swinging. Once you’ve swung, the ball moves herky-jerky through the air. It should be much smoother.

The interface is nice, though, offering all the information you’d expect without taking up too much of the screen. If you don’t like how the game will follow every shot, you can change that in the main menu, which is a nice touch. PGA Tour Golf makes an effort to give everything a TV broadcast feel, so there are commentators who will give flavor text before every hole and offer advice to you. It comes off as a little corny at times, since EA isn’t using real golf commentators.

But it’s still just another golf game.
