Tribute to “Hołda”
hołda [Silesian] - hałda [Polish] - mine waste dump
End of May was planned for my second Hołda Race - a race in Silesia mining region, where we got unicycle division last year - but unfortunatelly it was cancelled. For consolation for both them and us, we decided to meet anyway and ride together one loop of the planned track.
We gathered almost 20 people (including three unicyclists) and have fun ride with possibility to try harder parts that were excluded from Hobby version that unicycle category was. Then we had a coffee stop and the group split.
Jaśko with his two-wheeled friends took us to next town for some XC riding on mining dump than you can really see and feel, because the one in Chorzów park, where Hołda was planned, is all covered by nature for a long time now.
It was great fun with so many places to climb and nice descends. In some places we climbed on foot to try riding down, which sometimes was too slippery, but all fun. And I guess we impressed a lot our two-wheeled friends, but I must admitt that they also shown us some good technique on their bikes.
Towards the end of our stay there we got two boys that joined our group and were happy to see unicycles riding their tracks. One was not that happy at the end as I offered him a small race and he lost. But I must admit that it was not that easy to outride him as the road we raced was full of potholes, so I needed lots of attention on high gear.
Apart from riding on the heaps we got a nice views on industrial parts of the town as we passed closed steelworks and some other objects.
