Pieuvre and Vorsicht Kinder reviewed on "Gonzo Circus"
The Berlin label Kitchen Leg Records releases cassettes inspired by the DIY attitude of punk.
Pieuvre debuts there with the ep ‘Hyperstretch’. The trio rattles on all sides with their post-punk. The feedback in the guitars hurts sometimes reminiscent of the no wave of the years 1980, for example on closing track 'The Fun'. 'Trust' and 'This Is Not What I've Ordered' swinging with a funk- like rhythm. On 'Im Schlaf' is the guitar tuned so shrilly that it seems like Pieuvre is actually surfmu- wanted to play sick. The melodic highlight 'Skinny Jeans' remains just as rambunctious as the rest, but then with a nonchalance à la Wet Leg. Unlike that group, the informal attitude of Pieuvre, however merely rudimentary. Also Vorsicht Kinder debuts with this label. Their post-punk with no-wave edge rattles just like that. The messy two-four time of “Stimulation” steps through, while the female singers dissolutely heard the chorus to take. They bleat the often humorous ristic texts ruthlessly out. 'Fuck The Banana', however, takes care of it sooner for vicarious shame then comedy. That number just feels as "Ich Will Kein Baby Ich Will Bass" as a filler, and that on an album like that short as 'Verschluck Dich Nicht'. However charm the squeaky pianos and guitars that sound like a post-punk version of the toy-only instrument playing Pianoosaurus sometimes. At other times (‘Enemy’) it sounds like one again dissolute version of Young Marble giants. 'Wow Pow' also amuses with wacky sound effects, while “Human Waste' spooky begins before the group swings on firmly. But Vorsicht Kinder eventually stays too basic to really intrigue. (svw)
Still Here
To end the year on a positive note, here's a cool review of our debut EP in the December edition of Gonzo (Circus): « Samples van onder andere Orson Welles (uit ‘The Stranger’) geven de combinatie van post-metal en doom light even extra dimensie.

Tijdens West Wednesdays
Natuurlijk, elke band gezegend met een zanger als Markus Archer heeft al een voorsprong in warmte en melancholie, maar rond dat gegeven weet de band hier weer een aantal keer hét perfecte popliedje te benaderen.
Gonzo Circus is positief over 'Close To The Glass', het nieuwe album van The Notwist.

Explore yodeling from its African Pygmy origins to the Swiss Alps, avant-garde tonsil-twisters and hip hop with author Bart Plantenga. Vocal artists Phil Minton will perform a unique take on yodeling, while Bernhard Betschart performs naturjodels aka Yutz (shouts). Furthermore, Myriam van Imschoot and Doreen Kutzke present their experimental yodel-deconstruction duet called HOLA HU. We will also be showing a number of historical documentaries and video portraits. There's the possibility to have dinner before the concert. Kitchen opens at 19:00.

More information
This program is a collaboration between De Player, Gonzo (circus) and Mediamatic. Echokamer is a series of events during which composers, musicians and other sound-makers experiment with sound at, and with the sound of, Mediamatic Fabriek. The giant industrial hall reverberates and erodes, and produces quite a bit of sound all by itself. The perfect place for noisy experiments. Location: VOC-kade 10, Oostenburg Amsterdam. Tickets: €3 ex Mediamatic membership. Free for members of Subbacultcha and subscribers to Gonzo (circus): bring the latest issue for proof.
Performers
Bart Plantenga wrote YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO: The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World and more recently Yodel in Hi-Fi, From Kitsch Folk to Contemporary Electronica. These books view yodelling from an international perspective, and explore the origins and development of yodelling, as well as the traces of yodelling in contemporary music.
Phil Minton is a vocal artist from the UK and is known for his exuberant provocations of the vocal register.
The Australian Bernhard Betschart represents the natur jodel from Muotathal, Switserland, where yodeling is passed down from generation to generation.
Myriam van Imschoot is a Belgian artist-vocalist and Doreen Kutzke is one of a new generation of German yodelers interested in reinventing the yodel.
