I watched the movie Good Fortune earlier, after I saw the DVD for sale on a shelf yesterday (I hadn't even heard of it before). It's a charming, overall-enteraining spin on the It's a Wonderful Life/Life Swap genre.

Hard-working-but-broke Arj is close to giving up on life after he is fired and his car is towed the next day after he passes out after giving blood for cash (He's also living in his car at this point). To get him to appreciate what he has, the angel Gabriel (not that one) shows him what it would be like if he had the life of Jeff, the rich tech bro who fired him yesterday. Gabriel expects him to learn the lesson that money doesn't buy happiness and he's got good things to look forward to with a life of hard work...except no, Arj learns that money does actually make life better. He has no desire to go back to his old life, and Gabriel struggles to understand why not. The story eventually expands into Gabriel having to learn more about humanity himself, along with Jeff (the tech bro) learning what it's like to struggle without generational wealth.

The movie is written and directed by Aziz Ansari, who also stars as Arj. Keanu Reeves plays the angel Gabriel, and they get miles out of having him here. Seth Rogen plays Jeff, the tech bro (Look, he's not bad, don't think I'm saying he's bad, but he's playing the exact same Seth Rogen character you've seen a hundred times before so don't expect anything else). Keke Palmer plays Elena, Arj's co-worker and girlfriend who is in the same financial boat that he is in, but unlike him is determined to make things better rather than give up.

I like the fact that the movie doesn't have any sort of moral about the nobility of poverty. Struggling doesn't "build character". All it does is hurt. It hurts your dignity, it hurts your mental health, and it hurts your physical health. It costs money to be poor, and you cannot "pull yourself up". Arj ends the movie knowing that Jeff has a better life than he does. And he's still angry at what he has to suffer through, even if he has decided to try and fight to improve things instead of just giving up.

But he is going to fight.

I saw somebody describe it as a "toothless Parasite" (they meant it as a compliment), and I think that nailed it right on the head. It's toothless because it wants to be entertaining and fun, but it has the same point.
