Chapter 12: Beware Of The Charges

Eko is caught by some girl staring at a dress through a shop window. The girl just smiles, knowing that, phone or not, she's no different than any other girl.

Eko goes through her piggy bank for money but it's nowhere near enough for the dress. A commercial on the TV shows off different covers for phones, piquing Eko's interest...but she shakes her head, remembering that Hiroshi's in debt because of her. She doesn't want to cause him any trouble...anyway, Hiroshi comes by with cheap plentiful sushi for them, offering Eko to try. She tastes it...and says it's sour.

Later at a diner, he offers her ice cream. She's reluctant to try it, especially because it looks more expensive than the sushi, but she winds up tasting it and loves it. She asks for more and she and Hiroshi gorge themselves on food. After stuffing themselves, Eko gets up Hiroshi's ass about spending so much money, saying he'll put himself back in debt again...only for Hiroshi to wave a stack of cash in her face.

You see, Hiroshi just got a note from Akizuki (not sure if that's the sister, the class president or Ryu) that he doesn't have to pay off the porn site anymore. So they have excess left over from the photo contest...he and Eko can go on a shopping spree! Eko wants Hiroshi to get everything he wants but he already went out and brought it all already (detergent, shampoo, light bulbs, soap and a wok...yeah). Instead, he asks what Eko wants. Eko is about to ask for the dress but then they get her bill...800,000 yen (roughly $8,000 in US money). That's...noticeably higher than the porn site bill.

They're both shocked...then Eko is happy because a high bill means she's in high demand...then she feels guilty because she realizes that means that Hiroshi's in trouble. Realizing they're poor again, Eko keeps her lips sealed when Hiroshi asks about what she wanted earlier. Hiroshi tells her that even after he pays the bill, he'll still have some money left over. If she doesn't want anything, he'll get something else for himself. Eko agrees without protest...then he takes her to the clothes' store and says he wants to get the dress she was looking at for her.

That girl from earlier is a friend of his and she told him Eko was staring at the dress. He mentally reminds himself to thank the vice president (the girl) before Eko comes out in the dress she wanted to get:
