Good Session (2014) EPK
my therapist is the best i will fight everyone who disagrees
Got a little emotional in therapy tonight because my therapist was basically like, “It’s not fair for you to have to worry about not being rude to people who are being rude to you,” and I was like... Oh.
Session 16!
The session begins with the party in their rooms in the Spire, Elivyre just having finished a conversation with Rei in which she was forced to give up information about the guild. Aleesia had also just returned to the rooms for a different reason. She found herself in the temple of Melora, asking if Rokas really had died from a storm. She received no answer, but realized that her brother wouldn’t have much reason to travel far form land, and he would’ve been able to survive harsh weather if he hadn’t gone far.
After making a few stops in the city to mail various letters, the party heads to the river where Aleesia is able to secure free passage on a ship heading to Dawncrest. They spend a few days traveling. On the boat, Ophelia receives an unwanted visitor.
He appeared to be an unassuming human man, but as Ophelia looked upon him, his form flickered and revealed the bloody demon she had spoken to once before, in a dream. He entered her room, telling her it was time for her to fulfill her end of the bargain. The section of the Shadowfell the party is travelling to is the home of an old weapon known as the Sunsword. Ophelia needs simply to retrieve the sword for him and their deal will be complete. She agrees.
On the fourth day of their journey, the party finally lands in Dawncrest. They take a small boat to an island on the outskirts of the city, where a large house watches over the sea. They’re greeted by Aleesia’s twin siblings, who take them in the house to speak with the rest of the family who was able to make it. They find Aleesia’s parents, Fana and Norro, along with one of her older sisters, Liawynn. Qina, living in Steelwind, was not able to arrive yet, and Zinra had navy business that kept her away.
Aleesia speaks to Fana, asking her whether she thinks there’s any chance Rokas is still alive. Unfortunately, she does not. However, she does not think he was killed by a storm. She mentions the fact that Rokas’s ship building business was the most successful in Berkinsale, having sent a couple people out of business. She believes one of them might have had a hand in his death.
After a very tense dinner, the party heads off to the library, everyone interested in books of different subjects. Later, Ophelia confesses her deal with the devil to Luck, alone in one of the room’s, and the two spend some time together.
Late in the night, there’s a knock on Elivyre’s door. Aleesia’s mother, Fana, is waiting outside. However, Elivyre knows her as Vanya, one of the most feared and respected members of the Dark Hands, known for her talent in extracting information from people. Vanya lets herself into Elivyre’s room, asking her questions about the “council business” Elivyre is being sent along, along with demanding to know more about the investigation into Yorlin’s death. Elivyre ends up telling more than she intended, unnerved by the woman.
Early in the morning, before the other’s wake up, Aleesia and the rest of her family have a small ceremony for Rokas, saying goodbye to him one last time. Once the rest of the party wakes up, they have a quick breakfast before heading out, searching for the Vistani and Madame Eva. They were told an area the Vistani might be in, but not an exact location.
As they walk, a strange fog begins to roll in over the lands. It gets deeper and deeper, until they can’t see anything other than the ground beneath their feet, not even the sun or lanterns helping guide the way. After some time, Ophelia notices something a bit strange. The ground beneath their feet has changed from rocky to soft soil, leaves and twigs scattered around. None of the party remembers seeing or hearing of a forest around this area. Still, they continue on.
An hour or so passes before shapes begin to form in the distance. The fog begins to lift, and wagons can be seen, along with a hill with what appears to be a tent. Jovial music can faintly be heard, growing louder and louder the closer the party gets to the encampment. Entering it, they find a group of colorfully dressed, cheerful people who introduce themselves as the Vistani. After a couple of questions, it is revealed that the party has made their way into the demiplane of the Shadowfell known as Barovia. The Vistani tell them that Madame Eva is in the tent at the top of the hill.
They approach the tent to find it open, an old woman waiting for them inside. She gestures the party in a warm and inviting tent, filled with small animal figures. They range from ravens and bats to sharks or even spiders. Upon closer inspection, the figures are revealed to be delicately made from paper.
Eva greets the party, telling them to sit. She reveals the history of Barovia, telling them the lands have long been ruled by an evil being known as Strahd. Some years ago, the circlet left by the council in Mitharis was stolen, presumably by Strahd’s forces. If the party is able to retrieve it, then they will have it. However, in order to escape Barovia, Strahd must be defeated. Eva tells them she can help reveal the location of the circlet, along with where they must face Strahd in their final confrontation with him.
She sits, concentrating with her eyes closed. As she does, there’s the sound of fluttering of wings. One of the paper animals, a raven, flies over. As it lands on her hand, the paper unfolds, and a voice rings out. “The treasure lies in the sealed treasury of the Amber Temple,” it says.
Eva speaks up again, warning the party that Strahd is a dangerous enemy with powers beyond mortality, but she can help lead them to him. Another flutter of wings, and a paper bat approaches Eva this time. The voice speaks out again. “The beast sits on his dark throne.”
The party departs, save Ophelia who asks about the Sunsword. Eva tells her that it once belonged to Strahd’s brother. It used to be a very powerful weapon. She concentrates again, and this time a wolf makes its way across the tent and curls next to Eva, unfolding. “I see a sleeping prince, a servant of light and the brother of darkness. The treasure lies with him. But beware. The castle is full of dangers. Even once Strahd is defeated, retrieving it will be no easy task.”

The battle field after we slew our enemies… (Yes, that was a dog, no it was not a giant dachshund).
We had a record-breaking session today, with seven natural 1s and six natural 20s! (3 of the NAT 20s were mine, and 1 of the NAT 1s). We killed some pantsless guards, found the pants thief, saved her blink dog, and tossed the other dog into the river as a polymorphed fish. A very nice session. 😊🎲💕
While James is off shooting his new pilot “A Million Little Things”, let's return to 2014 for this week’s TBT.
After finishing Psych, James got cast in the CBS pilot "Good Session" opposite Mandy Moore, co-written and directed by John Hamburg. While the episode never saw the light of day, the script did find its way onto the internet and I invite anyone interested in imagining what could have been to read it (it’s quite obvious why Hamburg wanted James for the male lead).
Do keep in mind, though, that there will have been changes made to the script during the shooting process. So any on-site revisions, improvisations and scenes ending up on the cutting floor aren’t reflected in this version.
Honestly I do find it super funny that we adopt this Fallen (lowkey was Isaac heading that too) and then on the way back after getting permission to bring him to the Chantry, then they find out what he is. And Isaac realizes that the 'demon' that tried to ritually sacrifice him on Halloween was a fallen angel.
