What Is This Even?

Bro has become a bad word. It’s shorthand for a particular kind of smug, entitled jerk who runs around the world thinking it was put here for him. Bros are ignorant, self-centered and privileged. It’s got tinges of fratty date-rape, sports hooligan destructiveness, and drinking brews in dad’s car entitlement. 

And that sucks. 

Bro is obviously an abbreviation of brother. And brotherhood is the ultimate expression of non-sexual male companionship. It’s one of the few times men feel comfortable telling another man “I love you.” A man relies on his brothers. And women have brothers, men they rely on - by blood or by choice. 

So let’s take bro back. Not by bitching and whining about how it’s unfair that someone ‘took bro” from us. We’re men. We’ve run this planet for 99.999% of history. If we screwed up bad enough for bro to get a bad name, we’re the ones to blame. So lets take bro back it by being better bros, and demanding the same of our bros. 

Now to be clear, I don’t know what it takes to be a good bro. Just like everyone else, I’m making this up as I go along. But that’s the fun of a blog, we get to learn together. Do you really want some dude on the internet telling you how to live your life? I know I don’t. But a bro, working things out with you? Learning from each other? 

I think we can all use that.
