Day 54 - Tuesday 18th June - Melbourne
The first day of Melbourne is definitely worth a blog entry!
I woke in Brisbane and and after checking out, I busted out a job application before breakfast. That's how I roll. Another application for an admin job in one of the many Universities in Melbourne. Fingers firmly crossed!
We hung around the hostel until lunch and were then collected by our airport shuttle bus. We got the airport and boarded our last flight for a while for Melbourne. It was on the Ryanair of Australia - Tiger Airways!
The flight was probably one of the worst flights I have ever had. It was really bumpy and shaky and a couple of times (in a 2.5 hour flight) we had to return to our seats and strap ourselves in. We were all over the place, and then on the descent to landing we hit another patch of bumping around. It was probably the only time I have ever questioned whether we would survive a flight!! ha ha! We did survive, there was a harmony of babies crying and a lot of nervous looking passengers!
We got to Melbourne, grabbed our luggage and our shuttle bus was waiting for us. There was a rather balshy Woman giving the driver a hard time for waiting for 40 minutes. I must have sounded a bit smug when after she asked how long we had to wait for I said ten seconds. (tee her!).
We got to our hotel and had the most incredible welcome. The owner and receptionist were incredibly warm and friendly and filled us with lots of useful info and wished us lots of luck with our job hunt. Our room is really nice and I'm looking forward to actually unpacking a bit and not having to root around in a suitcase looking for a clean pair of socks!! WOOP!
We basically dumped our stuff and headed for some dinner. We popped into a noodle place just across the road from the hotel and again, got chatting with the owner who gave us lots of recommendations of things to do and places to go. The food was amazing too, cooked from scratch right in front of our face. What a good start. People are really bloody friendly and seem generally happy. In the first hour of our arrival (with the exception of the balshy lady who is probably not from Melbourne), I have good vibes about the place! Good first impression.
We returned to our room to chill out a bit. What a luxury to have a wardrobe, TV, basin and fridge in our room. Sounds odd, but when you have been staying in hostels for the last couple of months these things really are a luxury!!
Tomorrow we plan to take advantage of the free tourist bus which will give us a tour of our new city! HELL YEAH! WELCOME TO MELBOURNE!
We didn't take any pictures today as we were mainly on an aeroplane. There will be loads tomorrow I'm sure...
