A £31 billion US-UK AI and Quantum Push Technology Deal
The historic “Tech Prosperity Deal” between the US and UK pledges both countries to quick, collaborative nuclear, AI, and quantum computer research. The UK government says new public research programs and £31 billion in private funding from major American technology companies support this ambitious ambition.

Google is also investing £5 billion in DeepMind research and a new data centre in Hertfordshire. Apart from the processing power boost, CoreWeave will invest £1.5 billion in its UK operations, working with Scottish startup DataVita to develop a large renewable energy AI data centre. NVIDIA, which will deploy 120,000 cutting-edge GPUs across the UK, is likely the greatest contributor.
The ambitious “Stargate UK” project, designed in conjunction with OpenAI and Microsoft, will be supported by much of this infrastructure, including some in the North East's “AI Growth Zone”. NVIDIA's latest CPUs will use Arm semiconductor architectures, emphasising transatlantic convergence. These infrastructure improvements should create thousands of jobs and provide British companies the processing capacity they need to compete in the global AI market.
NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang termed the current moment the “Big Bang of the AI era,” calling the UK a “Goldilocks position, where world-class talent, research, and industry converge.” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, says the UK is a “longstanding pioneer of AI” with world-class researchers and a government that swiftly recognised AI's promise. He expects Stargate UK to boost productivity, economic growth, and scientific advances.
Parallel Pillar: Quantum Computing Even if AI investments dominate financial statistics, quantum computing is a key parallel pillar of the Tech Prosperity Deal. To promote quantum technology adoption in important industries like healthcare, defence, finance, and energy, the partnership will form a joint taskforce with leading researchers from both nations and industry exchanges.
Within short-term priorities, healthcare stands out. Direct simulation of chemical interactions by quantum computers could speed up drug discovery, which currently takes years and costs billions. According to the UK government, scaled quantum technologies could save millions of lives faster.
UK quantum momentum is high. NVIDIA, Digital Realty, and Oxford Quantum Circuits launched NYC's first quantum computer. To show strong transatlantic collaboration, U.S. quantum company IonQ joined with UK startup Oxford Ionics to establish an Oxford R&D hub.
Significantly, the arrangement merges AI and quantum through collaboration. Together, the two governments will develop AI models for fusion energy and medical research. By using AI's forecasting power with quantum computers' modelling power, researchers hope to reduce the time and cost of developing new technologies and medicines. Both NASA and the UK Space Agency will employ these AI models for prospective Moon and Mars explorations. Google DeepMind may advise the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the UK government on AI discovery as it continues its fusion research.
More Investment, Nuclear Other corporations have made major commitments besides AI and quantum bigwigs. Salesforce has pledged £1.4 billion to UK R&D expansion through 2030, securing its AI hub status. In Northamptonshire, domestic startup AI Pathfinder will invest £1 billion in computational capacity.
Oracle and Amazon Web Services pledged multibillion-pound investments, while BlackRock pledged £500 million for enterprise data facilities. In addition, NVIDIA will directly invest in UK AI startups, providing finance and infrastructure. TechUK will work with NVIDIA, Quanser, and QA to fund training and AI start-ups.
The Tech Prosperity Deal relies heavily on nuclear energy, despite AI and quantum dominating headlines. The collaboration will protect British customers from fossil fuel price volatility by speeding up reactor licensing. Using UK-US knowledge to accelerate commercialisation of fusion energy is part of the agreement's goal to guarantee renewable energy sources and reduce energy imports.
The UK government says cutting-edge GPUs and data centres and billions of dollars in new investment show that this partnership is already paying off. Although it is unknown if the US and UK will be able to sustain leadership in AI and quantum, these promises show their determination to lead in these transformative technologies.
