... you ever make a good thing the ultimate thing? ▫️ This speaks to me a lot as a creative and a new mother & wife. All these roles are “good” - in this context meaning a worthy and noble pursuit, a God given gift & calling. However none of these roles are the “ultimate” thing; the foundation on which we build all else, our sole identity, reason and purpose in itself for living. And if any of y’all have made good things into the ultimate thing you know what happens next: a crumbling, painful falling apart and recalibration. Because good things are just that: good. But they aren’t the Rock to build your house on. They are still shifting sand in comparison to the everlasting nature of the Almighty and our identity as God’s children. ▫️ How do we know if something good has become an ultimate? One sign is in identity: if the good thing - ie. being a writer or a painter or an emcee or parent - becomes our foundational identity and where our ego makes a home. “So much of life comes back to identity, and you can really tell you have an identity crisis when things don’t go well—when you get a rejection letter and when your ____________ isn’t getting the traction that you hoped it would. . . It’s okay to be disappointed if something didn’t work out, but if rejection is consuming, if it’s crushing, if it leads to anxiety or depression or these kind of things, then we know we have an identity problem when we care too much about wanting to be known as a _____________.” (J.A. If it robs you of peace of mind, whatever “it” is has probably taken up too much real estate in your heart already. ▫️ As a proud Hip Hop artist I struggled with this for a long time, it’s one of the reasons I took a hiatus.
