I'm in the Google domains vortex of hell, I stg.
A friend bought me a domain for my birthday twenty some odd years ago. He ran a domain registrar and I was asking a billion questions about domain registrations, so, bam -- virusq.net was mine.
I wanted email so he set up email. It wasn't as easy to use as Hotmail, so I didn't use it much. Fast forward a handful of years and he set up Google Workspaces for the domain, which made it easier to check my mail, but I still used it as a vanity forwarding account.
Fast Forward another five or so years and I'm applying for jobs and networking but all these emails with "virus" in the title go straight to the garbage bin, so I bought my own domain.
There was some weirdness about using a Hotmail or Gmail email as an administrator account for a Google Workspace so I set up my email on virusq.net as my admin.
It's worked for years. Years. I've used virusq.net and tuchanka.com for years this way.
Well, in August Google decided to convert Google Workspaces into a paid subscription system. But I wasn't able to upgrade my virusq.net domain to the subscription system because I don't own the domain -- my friend does.
He upgraded his stuff and everything worked for months, so I assumed all was good.
Yeah, turns out no. The admin account I used was not part of the upgrade so the admin account is lost to the ether and now so is the account I've been using for professional emails for decades.
Because Google Workspaces won't let me use my 25 y/o Hotmail account as an admin. And they won't let me set up a Workspace for the domain that I own. That I host on their service. That I pay a subscription for.
Any and all attempts to recover my accounts have been met with "contact your admin", who is me, who cannot access my own accounts.
Moral of the story is don't trust Google, I guess. I'm a year into untangling this and still can't access the email account I've been using for professional correspondence for over a decade.
Oh, and they only provide customer service to persons with an active Workspace account. Which I can't have because I'm blocked from upgrading.
