A city so beautiful you may never want to leave

Vancouver. Where the mountains meet the sea! There is a reason this place continually tops “The Most Liveable Cities” list. It doesn’t hurt that there are three local ski hills 45 minutes from downtown, the beaches that surround the city allow easy access to the water by kayak and the many parks within the city allow for an escape to nature not 10 minutes from the downtown core. In the surrounding hills there are a never ending labyrinth of hiking trails that offer a new adventure around any bend. Or perhaps you wish to take on the daring Capilano Suspension Bridge and Tree Top Walk. If you are looking for a less structured adventure take a kayak out into the harbour of False Creek and try and spot a harbour seal while you take in the magnificent city skyline. Vancouver is a city that is surrounded by opportunities for adventure seekers. One word of advice. Give yourself a lot of time….you may never want to leave.

100 Mile House

100 Mile house is a historic community known for its days during the Cariboo gold rush in 1861. This little town is found nestled in the Fraser Plateau between the Coastal and Rocky Mountains, and is just a 5.5 hour drive from Vancouver.

Despite being a small town, with a population of only 20,000, 100 Mile House has a number of activities to offer. They offer everything from Farmers Markets, Horseback Riding, Outdoor Tours, and Parks and a number of different restaurants. In the winter months, 100 mile house can reach temperatures to -10, and in the summer months they have average highs of 15 degrees.

Quesnel

Located at the far Northern reaches of the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region Quesnel is a city rich with history and surrounded by untouched nature. Its close proximity to the mighty Fraser and the Quesnel rivers allowed explorers and prospectors to access it early in the exploration of B.C and provided a rich bountiful land for the Chentsit’hala Carrier First Nations people to call home. The many provincial parks that are within close proximity to Quesnel and the surrounding wilderness offer many adventure activities for avid outdoor enthusiasts. One of the parks located nearby is Bowron Lake Provincial park. The large wilderness area within the parks borders consists of a 116km chain of lakes. These lakes are connected by a series of portages and form a circuit perfect for a multi-day canoe trip. Most people take between 6-8 days to complete the circuit and wildlife sightings are frequent in this rich undisturbed wilderness. Moose, beaver, black bear and grizzly are commonly seen. The lakes offer great fishing so you know you won’t go hungry. The lakes are splattered with reminders of an earlier time. Trapping cabins still stand in some places that date back to the 1920’s and serve as a reminder of the historical fur trade. There was, until recently it sloughed into the lake, reminance of a large Chentsit’hala Carrier Village that was said to consist of nine to eleven pit houses and would have had a population of over 100. This highlighted the importance of the fertile region to this First Nations People. This trip has grown in popularity over the years as more and more adventurers seek the unique opportunity it presents. So book early here. Quesnel is located 7 H 30 min from Vancouver on highway 97. You can access Quesnel via rail, air or bus offering a variety of different options for people who do not have a car. So if you want to get lost in nature and culture get up here!

Dawson Creek

Dawson Creek, found right on the border of BC and Alberta, is a small town that’s name derives from the creek that passes through the community. Once known for being a small farming community, it became a regional center when the Northern Alberta Railways was extended there in 1932. It is also known as “Mile 0 City” because of its location at the Southern end of the Alaskan Highway.

The four major industries in Dawson Creek are agriculture, retail, tourism and oil and gas. Because of its location, Dawson Creek is able to offer a number of outdoor and wilderness adventures. A few of the notable outdoor areas that are popular are:

• McQueen’s Slough – a great place for bird watching for all those bird enthusiasts! • Radar Lake – a quiet tranquil lake for those who are looking for peace and quiet can enjoy • Bear Mountain – this mountain is good all year round! A great place for skiing or snowboarding in the winter, and has great hiking trails in the summer • Tumbler Ridge – this park is a mecca for hikers and backpackers, in the past two years along 8 trails have been built!

Smithers

With a population floating around 6,000, Smithers is a small town in Northern BC that welcomes everyone that visits. Whether you decided to explore during the winter or summer, Smithers offers many different activities, mostly involving the outdoor landscapes the town has to offer.

Most people visit in the spring, summer, and fall for the fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. The biggest draw is definitely the steelhead for fishers, which runs between September and October. However, another big draw is the five types of pacific salmon that pass through the area.

In the winter, Hudson Bay Mountain is the place you want to be. The snow-peaked mountain is home to the Hudson Bay Mountain Resort, were 55% of the runs are for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. However, the remaining 45% is split between advance and beginner runs. As Smithers is located in the Northern part of BC, with a limited population, you never run out of fresh untouched powder on the mountain.

Terrace

Terrace offers recreation in every facet.  No matter what you ability, and what your passion, terrace has something for you to go out and get some. This week we took on the ever-romantic Sleeping Beauty Mountain Provincial Park… swoon. Straight out a fairy book, this pastoral forest will have you feeling as though you’ve been pricked with a needle. Certainly no snoozer though, the 6km of trails may sound tame, but its anything but. The first section provides moderately difficult hiking through a mature hemlock/fir forest and sub alpine meadow. From the meadow, the trail follows an unmarked ridge through a series of peaks, which eventually leads to the top of Sleeping Beauty Mountain.  Along the way you may have the chance to see the animals whose habitat is protected by the park - grizzly and black bears, moose, mountain goat, ravens and blue grouse.
