Amnesty International Toronto RGM Planning Committee

I participated in a planning meeting for Amnesty International's Toronto Regional General Meeting.  It will be an online exercise in October.

The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) is assembling a workshop for the event, on employing international law to bring kleptocrats to justice.

I am delighted that we are to be joined by Fernando Iglesias, Congressman for Buenos Aires and Chair of the Campaign for a Latin American and Caribbean Criminal Court, and Sheri Meyerhoffer, Canada's Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise.

Kumtor: une minière canadienne qui nous fait honte

L’entreprise canadienne suscite la controverse en Asie centrale.

I was glad to speak with Brigitte Noël, as she filmed her documentary on allegations of torture, corruption, and environmental poisoning at Kyrgyzstan's Kumtor gold mine.

As CEO of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC), I worked with the Kyrgyz Prosecutor General and MPs, to help them recover wealth looted from their country and bring the perpetrators to justice.

I must acknowledge the hard work of my GOPAC colleagues for the tireless passion they put into our efforts to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in Kyrgyzstan, especially: Jean-Pierre Chabot; Ann Marie Paquet; and Priya Sood.

I look forward to hearing the response from Centerra Gold, the Toronto-based company behind the Kumtor mine.

GOPAC Thanks our Outgoing CEO Akaash Maharaj

Our worldwide parliamentary membership is saddened to announce that Akaash Maharaj is standing down as our CEO, but we are delighted he has accepted the new role as our Ambassador-at-Large.

I am excited to begin 2019, leading the Mosaic Institute's work on pluralism within societies and peace between nations.

I am also honoured that the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption has asked me to continue advancing its mission, as Ambassador-at-Large.  In this volunteer role, I will focus on integrity in defence, security, and international sport.

Joining the Mosaic Institute

I am delighted to be joining the Mosaic Institute as its new CEO. I believe its mandate is the calling of our times: co-operation and dialogue between national communities to resolve conflict, promote peace, and build harmonious societies.

Serving as CEO of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) has been one of the great honours of my life. I feel a mix of sorrow at saying goodbye to my GOPAC colleagues, and joy at all that we have achieved over the past six years.

My time at GOPAC left me with a stark understanding that across the world, xenophobia and authoritarianism are again on the march. This is the moment for everyone who believes in pluralism and in the equal dignity of all peoples to stand up, to stand together, and to stand fast.

I am deeply grateful to Mosaic’s board, advisors, and staff for their confidence.

GOPAC Moldova

Moldova has Europe’s richest land, yet remains the continent's poorest nation. It straddles the EU and Russian spheres, and is being both courted and threatened as it chooses its future. Its people have shown remarkable courage, but it is an open question whether its political institutions will prove equal to them. GOPAC's global alliance of legislators is proud of our members who have come together to form GOPAC Moldova in this hour, to advance the cause of democracy, integrity, and accountability. We are also grateful to UNDP Moldova for their ongoing support.

Rolf Holmboe

I am grateful to Rolf Holmboe, Denmark's former Ambassador to Syria, for his advice on potential interparliamentary talks to support the UN's Geneva Peace Talks on Syria. Many people warn me that this is a hopeless mission, but the wages of the Syrian war are too terrible for us to just wring our hands; we can work with bloody-minded determination instead of hope.
