On Tuesday, House Republicans released a 2018 budget plan that would make cuts to Medicare and Social Security, despite President Trump’s campaign pledge to keep those entitlement programs intact.

The proposal calls for more than $200 billion in cuts to mandatory programs. It also serves “as a vehicle for changing taxes,” CNN reports, which is “the primary legislative focus of the 2018 budget.”

Today the House Budget Committee is marking up the GOP’s FY 2018 budget resolution, which includes Speaker Paul Ryan’s “Medicare premium support” scheme – an innocuous name for turning time-tested senior health care coverage into “Coupon-Care.”

Obamacare has dodged many bullets over the past few weeks.

Bills in Congress that would have gutted Medicaid and repealed the ACA crashed and burned. President Donald Trump, after threatening for months to cut off billions of dollars in subsidies to insurers, caved and made the August payment. The Trump administration is, so far, enforcing the ACA’s individual mandate. And despite dire warning that dozens of counties would be left with no insurers, nearly every single onehas been covered.

But health care experts and advocates tell TPM that Medicaid and the individual markets remain under the gun, with various looming threats from Congress and Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Here are the five ways the Trump administration and Hill Republicans could still go after the nation’s health care system in the months ahead.

The secret about Medicare is that it should fulfill many more health care needs than it currently does. Making Medicare great would be politically popular and eliminate needless fragmentation in the system. And yet, nobody wants to talk about it.

Budgets, it is often said in Washington, are moral documents meant to convey priorities. House Republicans’ fiscal year 2018 budget makes their priorities crystal clear—namely, delivering tax cuts to millionaires at the expense of America’s struggling working families.

The budget’s radical, sweeping cuts to programs that everyday Americans rely on should be a wake-up call for anyone who believes that congressional Republicans are more reasonable than President Donald Trump. Like the budget the Trump administration released in May, House Republicans’ budget would gut services for people with disabilities, eviscerate Medicaid, cut Social Security, and hike costs for families struggling to afford college.
