I wrote smth abt Bif and Derby's relationship bc I found it interesting

It's kinda unorganized and rambly, but who cares

Idk why Bif is often portrayed as derby's biggest bootlicker, like he's pretty independent and confident on his own. Unlike Peanut, who is actually his leader's bootlicker, mentioning Johnny 30 times in is voicelines, Bif never really mentions Derby.

Also, other preps eat Derby's compliments up in their positive personals (not Bif though), like Derby knows how to weaponize affection. Derby’s own issues make him hyper-aware of how to keep people under his thumb. Bif and Derby probably grew up together in the same circuit. Bif seems to follow Derby not because he idolizes him but because he's conditioned to follow him and for the benefits that come along.

They both benefit from working together, Derby is the heir, the symbol, the upper crust. Bif is the enforcer, the wall that lets Derby feel untouchable. Neither could hold their status without the other. But I feel like there isn't a strong mutual emotional closeness between each other, it's more like transaction than genuine heartfelt friendship. Like Derby publicly shames Bif for losing to Jimmy. It’s compliance mistaken for belonging.

Being rich isn't the only criteria/condition of being a prep. Gordon (non-clique) is also rich coming from his voiceline about complaining about his allowance dropping to $200 like that's more than $300 in 2025 (the fact that he used get more... Gordon greedy as hell), and him bragging about going to Ivy shows that their family is very well off. It’s possible that Derby offered Bif status, safety, and a place at the top of the clique food chain, and Bif’s been clinging to that deal ever since. That's why Bif stays loyal to someone who barely even respects him. He might not actually like Derby, but he definitely respects the power Derby grants him.

I'm assuming Bif sees Derby as a status symbol or like a savior from his bullied past. Derby sees him more as a tool than a friend. Tad's line, "Derby may not be happy with Bif, after I have a chat with him," suggests Bif is vulnerable to manipulation from within his own group. Also, the chat thing is a pressure from Derby that probably drives Bif’s need to prove himself.

They act like friends when mocking someone else, but it’s more of a performance of unity than a bond. He gets to be one of them until Derby reminds him, that he’s not really family by calling him a "filthy democrat". Neither of them are "good", they are mutually exploitative.
