Gordon Lightfoot "Sundown" LP. I know I've featured the original US press on here before. But today I felt like busting out this version, obviously spurred on by the MFSL Dark Side spin. The Foot put out some really solid albums in the late 60's thru the early 70's. The aren't too long or overly complicated. He never really chased trends. His stuff wasn't hippie dippy folk or hillbilly country. It was just honest, catchy singer-songwriter compositions with smart arrangements and clever little flourishes with background vocals or the occasional backing with strings that made his songs stand out from others. There are 2 big hits on this album ("Sundown" & "Carefree Highway") but almost all of the other songs are strong originals worth repeated listening. In a 2016 Sirius XM interview, Billy Joel said he was trying to write a song that someone like Gordon Lightfoot would sing when he wrote his song "She's Always a Woman".

The tribute I thought fit him best was "the Mark Twain of folk music". For those who love folk music (admittedly usually not a favorite of mine), Gordon Lightfoot was a master. Sundown was a big hit, but I think "If You Could Read My Mind" is a near perfect song and the best G.L. tune...full of pathos (written about his own failing marriage), beautifully arranged.
