Gordon Lightfoot (1938–2023)
In a 2016 Sirius XM interview, Billy Joel said he was trying to write a song that someone like Gordon Lightfoot would sing when he wrote his song "She's Always a Woman".
The tribute I thought fit him best was "the Mark Twain of folk music". For those who love folk music (admittedly usually not a favorite of mine), Gordon Lightfoot was a master. Sundown was a big hit, but I think "If You Could Read My Mind" is a near perfect song and the best G.L. tune...full of pathos (written about his own failing marriage), beautifully arranged.
Chorus:
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back
