Gorilla Biscuit is one of those versatile hardcore bands that'll put your head in the clouds or have you coming down with a case of some hardcore blues.

So giving nothing less than perfect, GB's album "Start Today" is an account of that all too familiar teenage buzz. With tracks like "New Direction" and "Degradation" you'll be recalling dear memories, like you and your friends hopping class to slam in a dusty yard, stumbling into trouble, and swinging away wishing your hometown had more to offer...starting to sound like the lyrics of a Gorilla Biscuit/Ramshackle Glory mash up. Well, regardless of what comes to my mind the spirited lyrics of "Start Today" will get your heart pumping for that change you always dreamt of as a kid. What a way to start the day.

Loved Tracks #15 - Gorilla Biscuits - Stand Still

Do I love this song? Yes.

I like hardcore very sparingly. Like, the top of the food pyramid sparingly.

I actually piss my friends off who are actually into hardcore because the best way to describe me is like that guy who thinks he's into hip-hop just because he listens to Biggie and 2Pac. Biggie and 2Pac are two of the best artists in the genre, but that's the point: it's like liking The Beatles and the Beach Boys and no other rock music. Hardcore kids don't like living in the past; they're always searching for the next best thing.

Anyway, Gorilla Biscuits, by my estimation, is one of the best hardcore bands ever. Start Today (1989) is a definitive hardcore album and it's hard to pick that "one" good song from it. And they're very positive too. "Stand Still" is a very anti-TV, anti-laziness type of song which is very ahead of its time. "Sitting down on a couch you watch / A fucking slave to a TV show," they shout. There's a hilarious line about Donkey Kong that really dates this song, but really, nothing has changed: if GB were around today, they'd probably just replace "Donkey Kong" with "Call of Duty" or "iPhones." "Stand Still," like all of the songs on Start Today mix genre-defining hardcore music with sharp social commentary that still holds up today.
