For the end-of-year book ask: 3, 18, 12
Thank you for indulging me! Many blessings on your new year! (Side note, if you're interested in more book stuff, @inuy21 and I have a book club blog at @readtilyoudie)
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Oooo, good question. And a hard one at that. Ummm. Okay, let's do this.
To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo: An enemies to lovers little mermaid retelling that I read in December and am OBSESSED with like automatically. I also want it noted that I've read a lot of these retellings and this is the best one I've found so far.
Say Yes To The Marquess by Tessa Dare. I read this book TWICE this year. Like, I am so head over heels for it and the romance. It's sexy and sweet and I think about it way more than I probably should and I might even try to Draw something from it.
Brazen & The Beast by Sarah MacLean: Inu struggled with this book for the same reasons I loved it. Overweight protag, I feel for you. A super sexy romance? Hell yes. A take no shit kind of woman? Perfection. I just.... I have a lot of emotions. It helps that he's a dumbass and so is his brother.
These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas. I instantly became OBSESSED with this series. It's just, ohhhh. I wish there was a fandom presence with this. It's a big case of characters and is dark and delicious and sweet. Someone called it Jane Austen meets Xmen and I can't unsee that.
Can I Kiss You Every Day? by Hatsuharu. A short and super cute/super funny manga series. I was taken in surprise by how much I fell in love, and yet I've never heard anyone talk about it.
18. How many books did you buy?
Enough that Thriftbooks gave me the special VIP status of when you spend a huge amount. Also all giftcards I got were spent on ebooks. So... I hate to say it but probably over 100.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
HA. YES. I have a whole folder of books I didn't finish but here's some special shoutouts:
Blood Countess by Lana Popovic: What I wanted out of this book didn't align with what this book actually was. It was historical in a very loose sense when I wanted more adherence to the actual history.
The Seafarer's Kiss by Julia Ember: Bad writing. Unsympathetic characters. And a little mermaid retelling in the absolutely loosest sense.
Daring & The Duke by Sarah MacLean: I'm noticing that in a series, she usually has at least one bad book. And as this was the last book in the series, it was all the more disappointing.
A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin by Sophie Jordan: It was just drama, one hit after another, and super frustrating.
The Chosen and The Beautiful by Nghi Vo. I keep forgetting that I don't actually like the Great Gatsby.
Within The Sanctuary of Wings by Marie Brennan: WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT IS THIS ENDING. This last book in the series just JUMPED it to a new genre and I am Not Happy about it.
