For take your kid to work day I went with my dad to Gorman Bros. Mill. I learnt many things like how the wood get cut down and made into the planks, how the wood planks go through the planer area where it gets sanded and make sure it is perfect. My dad works in the planer room so that is where we stayed most of the time. We met his co-workers and talked with them for a bit as well. There was clothing rules there though. My dad and I both had to wear hard hats, glasses that protect our eyes, a safety vest so the fork left drivers can see us, ear plugs and boots.
Some things I like about his work was the size of it because there is like 8 or more different sites that you could work at, we only went to two though. I also liked how the wood planks went through the planer area because it was organized and techno. One last thing I liked was how most of the things that people did was by hand, like seeing for any mistakes on the boards and if so take them out, or watch the boards go safely through the sander. It was all very neat.
Some things I did not like was the sound because it was so loud, even if you had earplugs in the sound would be normal. That was the main thing. I also didn’t like the dirtiness of it because there was wet sawdust outside which was moldy and muddy and inside your pants would be covered with it. One last thing I didn’t like was the danger of the job because there is forklifts around everywhere and at night they might hit you and the machines might cut your hand off.
5 attributes my dad’s job has is everything a thinker has because he needs to know the knowledge and understand things to solve a problem, create and use criteria to make judgments, understand and apply vocab and concepts, Utilize a variety of thinking strategies and organizers, and Exhibit the values, dispositions, and attitudes of a careful and conscientious thinker
