So... I’m not the only one who wants to know wtf happened to Ghost, right?
The Siege of Winterfell Makes No Sense
Since tonight is probably the last big battle episode we’re going to get, now is as any good a time to talk about how much the Game of Thrones showrunners suck at writing battles that aren’t based on the ones in the book.
A not even slightly comprehensive list of the dumb things the defenders did in this battle:
Put all their infantry on the field instead of on top of high ass walls. Remember how in the books they mention one man on a wall is worth ten beneath it? I feel like someone forgot to mention to the showrunners that it applies to wights too.
Threw all their cavalry away head on charging at an enemy that won’t break. There is absolutely no reason dothraki shouldn’t have been raining obsidian tipped arrows on the wights as they kited them like actual horse archers.
Stopped using their exploding catapults like halfway through for no discernible reason.
Created a dinky fire trench when really they should’ve rigged out the field beforehand with tar so they could light in a carpet of flame once the wights were on top of it.
Didn’t actually shoot any arrows while the wights chilled behind the trench.
No burning oil to tip down on the wights, that thing actual medieval armies did all the time.
Let’s talk about taking out the Night’s King. If this was the plan, as they mentioned last episode, then why was Theon all on his lonesome? Why weren’t their traps laid? Why weren’t there more people defending him? Why was Arya there randomly at the end instead of lying in wait the whole time?
I’ll probably add more to this list later, but I want to emphasize that these are not just nitpicks. Having your characters do dumb stuff in battle robs your story of power and weight.
Let’s take the example of the Night’s King raising the dead halfway through the battle: this moment doesn’t hit as hard as it should because by that point in the battle everybody is already fucked. The wights are over the walls of Winterfell, most of the defenders dead. They go from losing really badly to… losing super duper badly? It doesn't register on an emotional level. It would’ve hit much harder and more effectively if our characters were holding the wights off at the wall, and then the dead got raised and that’s what tipped them over. Battles need to have an ebb and flow, and at least a nominal grasp of logic and plausibility.
A Note on Dragonglass
So I understand other people are having deep emotional thoughts and biting their nails about shipping in the new GOT season, but honestly the number on thing that’s bothering me about it?
The goddamn dragonglass.
Dragonglass is obsidian. Obsidian can’t be melted down and recast like metal. You can’t get large blades from it. You just can’t. An obsidian sword shouldn’t look like this:
It should look like this:
This is a Macuahuitl. It’s how mesoamerican cultures made actual obsidian weaponry. This is what they should be facing the army of the dead with.
And that’s the tea.
