I appreciate your comment. You're right, I did pass over the cold opening scene, but we are both aware of the conflicting messages throughout the episode. PS. 'awkwardly lampshaded' may be my new favourite phrase. =)

I mean the Bechdel test isn't the be all/end all of something's success so the fact that the episode passed at least twice isn't incredibly meaningful in the long run. I found myself noticing with suspicion and irritation that almost all the "experts" the train had recruited were white men, and while there were some POC and women they didn't have any actual, you know, lines or roles. There was no reason the train conductor and the engineer and the professor expert guy etc all had to be men. ZzZz. Especially since we were given no clear reason Maisie (or her grandmother) was on board.
