Great Expectations
Now, I know a lot of people having prejudices for or against older literature. Many of us have nightmares in which our English teachers cram dry pages of unintelligible crap down our throats and try to squeeze meaningful essays out of us.
BUT... the annoying, bitter adults who should never, ever have tried to teach us should not shut us off from a ton of really awesome books. One such book is Great Expectations.
This is a pretty exciting book with several decent plot twists. The characters are lovable (and hatable, very hatable.) Pip, the main character, is really sweet at the beginning, but don’t get too attached, because you will hate him by the end of the first volume. However, he has a satisfying redemption arc.
For those who like deep thought, pay attention to the themes of appearance vs. reality, power, and the influence of someone’s childhood environment on their personality.
