Autumn climbing in Chamonix, part. 1
How do you call people that think they can climb the north face of Aiguille des Pèlerins in bad conditions back and forth in less than 8hrs ? Over-confident guys... This sums up our adventure that day.
First Guillaume, Fabien and I, had to break the trail through a deep snow pack on the glacier to get to the route. The first pitches were under a huge over-hanging serac, so we tried to move fast while simul-climbing. Spindrifts were swirlind around us, carrying all the fresh snow plastered on the face.
Innocently, we had hoped for a nice ice line inside the gully. However, we only found dry rock buried under inconsistent snow. No really the best conditions for climbing. But the pitches we did weren’t that steep, and the three of us managed the climb without to much strain. The protections on the other hand were sort of symbolic...
At 2:30pm we had climbed about the two thirds of the route, which is 550m high. Estimating that we would need at least 3 more hours to get to the top, we decided to rappel down at this point, in order to descend the route before the night... It didn’t work out ! We missed the last cable car, and had to walk all the way back to the valley in the darkness. Good thing we brought our headlights.
So we completely underestimated the climbing time for this route knowing the conditions, but hey, we had a great mountaineering adventure ! We will definitely be back on this route in better times !
A good time on the Lafaille gully, Mont Blanc.
